'Spy Kids Reboot:' Netflix Reveals Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi Will Star In Remake

"Spy Kids," the smash film that debuted in theaters more than 20 years ago, is returning in a fresh form. The first installment was released in 2001 to widespread critical acclaim, prompting the showrunners to order three further sequels, "Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams," "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over," and "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World."
After the fourth film, it was widely considered that the saga had reached its inevitable ending because the characters had grown beyond their roles. However, Netflix announced the relaunch of the project early last year as a film centered on a multicultural family.
While much information regarding the picture has remained unknown since then, the media giants recently revealed that Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi would feature in the upcoming version.
'Spy Kids' Gets A New Villain
Levi and Rodriguez will play international spies in the forthcoming version of the family-friendly picture, which will also star Everly Carganilla and Connor Esterson in kid roles.
Robert Rodriguez will return as writer/director, and the film will be co-produced by Skydance Media and Spyglass Media Group. It was confirmed in March 2022 that it would debut on Netflix, making it the second "Spy Kids" production made for the streaming channel.
The showrunners revealed at the time of the project's introduction that the new film follows the same course as the previous ones, with the new family quartet of spies working together to foil the villain's schemes.
The announcement partly read," [The Plot] is set after the children of the world's greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful game developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, leading them to become spies themselves to save their parents and the world."
The release date for the next Spy Kids film has yet to be determined but might be set for a 2023 release. Rodriguez is now working on a thriller titled "Hypnotic," which is presently in the post-production phase.
A Throwback In Time
While the newest news may keep audiences waiting for the film's release, many may watch the previous installment to get in the mood for the next one.
The first film in the preceding franchise starred a younger version of Carla Gugino and Antonio Banderas as the spies alongside Carmen and Juni Cortez(Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara), as the kids who were oblivious of their parents' secret agent profession.
The characters Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez, Carmen, and Juni's parents were portrayed by Banderas and Gugino. The plot at the time centered on their abduction by a villain, forcing the kids to suit up and devise a plan to save their parents.
The spy foursome would return for the next two chapters but not for the fourth. In the last run, Jessica Alba's Marissa, together with her two stepchildren Rebecca and Cecil (Rowan Blanchard and Mason Cook), fought a crazed Timekeeper (Jeremy Piven) who attempted to take over the globe.
Spy Kids Box Office Success
The first picture was a big hit, grossing over $147 million at the box office. The second sequel, "Spy Kids: The Island Of Lost Dreams" (2002), grossed $119 million, while the third sequel, "Spy Kids: Game Over" (2003), grossed $197 million.
The brand grew into a popular family favorite throughout the years, and a remake has been on the cards for quite some time. However, before the forthcoming relaunch was announced, the franchise had a series run on Netflix.
The show, titled "Spy Kids: Mission Critical," aired for two seasons, with each season consisting of ten episodes. The Weinstein Company produced it in cooperation with Mainframe Studios, and Robert Rodriguez served as one of the executive producers when Bob Weinstein dropped out alongside Harvey Weinstein's departure from TWC.
It debuted on Netflix on April 20, 2018, and has since gained praise for its colorful protagonists and humorous material.
Possible Cameos

Regarding probable cameos in the current remake, PenaVega confirmed last year that she was available to star in a revival during an interview with Insider to commemorate the 20th anniversary of "Spy Kids."
"Oh my Gosh. Yes. Yes," the actress said in response to a question about if she would ever reprise her role if a reboot were ever made.
The actress added, 'But it's been so many years that are you kidding? In a heartbeat, and I know Daryl would say the same. Like in a heartbeat, we would both be there.'
Emily Osment, who appeared in both the second and third films, recently told People she was interested in making a return, saying at the time, "I think we should. Call Robert Rodriguez right now, we'll do it!"
All such probable appearances are still speculative, as the showrunners have only announced the core actors thus far, with the film still in its early phases of development.
