Bindi Irwin Gives Update On Koala Caught In Barbed Wire Fence

Bindi Irwin, the daughter of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, gave fans an update on Matt the Koala, who was found wrapped in barbed wire.

The poor animal was found hanging by his arm on a barbed wire zoo and was subsequently rushed to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

Bindi Irwin explained that the koala, which they named Matt, had been caught in a barbed-wire fence and was found hanging by his arm. He was quickly rushed to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, where the team tried to treat his injuries.

"Matt the koala was found hanging by his arm caught in a barbed-wire fence," Irwin wrote in a post on Instagram on Thursday morning. "He was rushed to our @AustraliaZoo Wildlife Hospital where amazing Dr. Ludo and the team quickly began to treat his injuries."

However, the team isn't sure if Matt the Koala will be able to make a full recovery, given the amount of nerve damage caused by the barbed wire. Fortunately, the expert medical team at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital was quick to jump into action.

"The wire was wrapped so tightly around his arm, it had caused severe nerve damage, and Matt is now unable to walk correctly with that arm," she explained. "Dr. Ludo administered pain relief, fluids, and heat compressions to his arm to assist with the swelling."

It's not known how long it will take Matt to recover, but Irwin said that Matt will stay with their team at the Wildlife Hospital for the time being. She reminded others to be on the lookout for other animals that may be trapped in barbed wire since it seems to be a more common occurrence than one might think.

"Matt will remain in the Wildlife Hospital’s ICU under the specialized care of our team," she explained. "Every year, the team treats hundreds of native animals that have been caught in barbed wire."

Irwin encouraged her followers not to approach injured wildlife. Instead, she advised them to contact their nearest Wildlife Hospital so that they can properly remove the animal from the barbed wire without hurting it further and give them "a second chance of survival."

"Please, keep an eye out for injured wildlife, and contact your nearest Wildlife Hospital so that we can give them a second chance at survival," she concluded. "We hope that Matt makes a full recovery one day, and is released back into the wild. She ended her post by tagging @wildlifewarriorsworldwide.

Only one day before his late father's birthday in late February, his son Robert Irwin revealed that he was trying to make his father proud by following in his footsteps and taking steps to help protect koalas, which have been listed as an endangered species.

“Koalas have officially been listed as an endangered species,” Robert began in a lengthy Instagram post back in February. “Here in Australia, we pride ourselves on being home to some of the most prolific and unique species on the planet and koalas are undoubtedly the icons of our native wildlife.”

“But, Australia is also home to the highest mammal extinction rate of any country on earth,” he explained. “This upgrade in koala conservation status is yet another devastating reminder of the threats that climate change and habitat loss pose to our natural world. We have a lot of work to do if we are going to create positive change for koalas and the many other species in strife.”

Robert then shocked many fans when he revealed that none other than Seth MacFarlane had actually helped them finish construction on their koala ICU in their wildlife hospital in Robert's home country of Australia.

“We are so happy to be doing our part. Through the support of @macfarlaneseth we’re proud to have finished construction on a purpose-built, state-of-the-art koala ICU at our wildlife hospital,” he continued. “This gives us the opportunity to cope with the huge numbers of koalas that we treat at the hospital and provide life-saving care.”

“Our goal is for each koala to be rehabilitated and released back to the wild,” he concluded. “Together we can all ensure that these truly special animals are on the planet forever.”
