Everything Star Wars Fans Have To Look Forward To After 'Obi-Wan Kenobi'

On Wednesday, Star Wars fans watched the finale of "Obi-Wan Kenobi" as the six episode limited series came to an end.

Although fans were excited to see Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen reprise their roles from the prequel trilogy, reception to the Disney+ live-action series was mixed and it seems doubtful that Obi-Wan will return for a second season.

However, there are many Star Wars shows in the works at Disney+, with another one coming up later this year.

At a recent Disney Investor Day, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy excited fans when she said, "We have a vast and expansive timeline in the Star Wars mythology spanning over 25,000 years of history in the galaxy — with each era being a rich resource for storytelling."

However, the next Star Wars series to hit Disney+ is "Andor," the prequel series to 2016's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

During the annual fan event Star Wars Celebration, it was announced that "Andor" will have two seasons of twelve episodes that lead into the beginning of "Rogue One," which eliminates the possibility of a third season.

The show will focus on Diego Luna reprising his role as the titular Cassian Andor and explain how he got started with the Rebellion.

"Andor" will hit Disney+ on August 31 and release new episodes every Wednesday.

Set around roughly the same time period, "The Mandalorian" will return for its third season. The show was a massive hit on the fledgling Disney+. After its second season, Disney released "The Book Of Boba Fett," which wrapped up its seven-episode run earlier this year.

The show received criticism for relating Boba Fett to a background character; in the fifth episode, Din Djarin took center stage and focused on his journey to reunite with Baby Yoda, also known as Grogu or The Child. As such, many fans felt that "The Book of Boba Fett" was really a bridge between seasons two and three of "The Mandalorian."

Season 3 finished filming in March and will hit Disney+ in February 2023. Katee Sackhoff will reprise her role as Bo-Katan Kryze as the show takes a deeper dive into Mandalorian culture.

In what marks yet another spin-off series, Ahsoka Tano will also get her own Disney+ series called "Ahsoka" that started filming last month. Although Ahsoka first made her appearance in the animated cartoon "The Clone Wars" and later in "Rebels," an older Ahsoka has been played by Rosario Dawson in the live-action series.

"Rebels" character Sabine Wren will also be making her live-action debut through Natasha Liu Bordizzo. Hayden Christensen will also be reprising his role as Darth Vader for this new series as well.

"Ahsoka" is expected to hit Disney+ in 2023 after season 3 of "The Mandalorian."

Numerous other Star Wars series are in the works, although they have no set release date. At Star Wars Celebration, Disney announced that they tapped Jude Law to star in "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew," which they compared to "The Goonies." Although it stars four children about ten years of age, it has been described as not a show exclusively for children. The show will be directed by "Spider-Man: No Way Home" director Jon Watts.

There has also been a lot of buzz about "The Acolyte," helmed by "Russian Doll: creator Leslye Headland. The show has been described as "a mystery thriller that will take us into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging Dark Side powers in the final days of the High Republic era." Unfortunately, there is very little known about the series so far.

For fans of the Star Wars animated series, season 2 of "The Bad Batch" will be released on September 28 and contain 16 episodes. There is also an animated adventure starring C-3PO and R2-D2 called "A Droid Story" but not much has been revealed about that project.

Although all Star Wars movies are available to stream on Disney+, it's predicted that future Star Wars movies will have theatrical releases.

The only movie that had a title is "Rogue Squadron," which was originally scheduled for release in December 2023. "Rogue Squadron" would have marked the first Star Wars film since 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker," which closed out the nine-episode Skywalker Saga that started with "A New Hope" in 1977.

The movie is being created by Patty Jenkins, who pushed back her commitment to Lucasfilm to focus on finishing up "Wonder Woman 3."

Since there's no telling when "Rogue Squadron" will come out, it's possible that "Thor: Ragnarok" director Taika Waititi's film will come out first. His film is expected to focus on entirely new characters but plot details are still under wraps.

"The Last Jedi" director Rian Johnson has also remained mum on his own Star Wars trilogy that was announced almost five years ago. Given the success of his "Knives Out" series and the giant deal he signed with Netflix, it looks like Star Wars might not be a priority for him at the moment.

News about more upcoming Star Wars titles is expected at the D23 Expo this September.
