What Do Audiences Think Of ‘Lightyear’?

On Monday morning, the comedy-adventure had a 76% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 86% audience score.

Although the movie is geared towards a younger audience, at least one fan advised not to take young children to see it due to the complex sci-fi themes.

Jennifer S said, “We loved the premise of the movie, and we laughed out loud often. I think that the age for children might be 7/8 and above, I would not recommend taking a younger child, the storyline is fairly developed and is not child based. The toddlers in the theater got bored and noisy from playing around. Other than the action scenes (fighting robots) the movie was more G than PG.”

Kameron B agreed, writing, “Good film, yet very predictable. Made more for older children than young ones.”

Gma-VARN wrote, “3d is good but not a toy story & kids under 10-12 probably won't get it. This grandma was not entertained. Sorry - but better to wait for Disney plus.

However, some fans and adults who grew up with the original franchise did enjoy it.

Mattique J wrote, “Was a huge fan of the show growing up so, I was excited to take my girls to see it. I really enjoyed myself and my kids did too. I think that's really all that matters with kids' movies Enjoying them as a family.”

At least one audience member didn’t enjoy the film at all.

Marco S wrote, “Pixar can't deliver every time. A highly anticipated movie that ended up leaving me disappointed. Can't say it was bad, but compared to what I expected, it made me feel as though it was. Might be time to leave the Toy Story franchise alone now, before it gets worse.”

One Fan Calls Disney’s Latest Movie A ‘Masterpiece’

However, one user named ItGamJoe gave the movie a glowing review.

“Lightyear is a film about mistakes,” they wrote. “It’s a film about not being afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. It’s a film about learning, improving, loving, and becoming a better version of yourself. Lightyear teaches us all to sometimes take a break from the everyday busyness of life and live a little, enjoy the small things like the friends we make, the family we have, and the beautiful experiences we all go through that make our lives the impactful experiences they are.”

“Lightyear is a story about love, and love in many forms - including a brave Love between a lesbian couple that are truly happy,” they continued. “Without spoiling, Lightyear is a film about so many lessons. It’s funny, silly, and has so much heart. If for the reasons mentioned above, you have any biases against watching this movie, please reconsider and give this movie a chance. It might not make you change your mind about certain topics. But give it a full, genuine watch. I want to thank Disney and Pixar for an amazing film. Lightyear is a masterpiece that will go down in history as being a very impactful film.”

However, some fans were just as passionate in their dislike of the film.

One user named Mom wrote, “There were some characters who really rubbed me the wrong way. I like Buzz and his character development, but I hated the other companions besides the cat. They just kind of ruined the film for me. I was hoping for a more serious film instead of comedy every 2 seconds. I get it’s a kids' film, but there were certain scenes in there that shouldn’t have been involved for a children’s film. I won’t be bringing my kids to see it, unfortunately.”

It seems like audience reactions to the film are truly a mixed bag. As one fan noted, if you’re wary of heading out to a theater and forking over the price of a ticket, it might just be better to wait a few months until the movie becomes available to stream on Disney+.
