Netflix Tragedy: Two Dead & Six Injured Near Set Of "The Chosen One"

A new tragedy is rocking Hollywood.

Months after Halyna Hutchins lost her life on the set of “Rust,” new fatalities have occurred on a different Hollywood project.

The Hollywood Reporter reported on Saturday, June 18, two actors from Netflix’s “The Chosen One” were killed in a car accident.

Six other cast and crew members were injured in the crash as well.

“The Chosen One” centers around a 12-year-old boy who learns he’s the returned Jesus Christ, destined to save humankind. It is based off of the comic book series by Mark Millar and Peter Gross.

The accident occurred after the van everyone was riding in lost control and crashed near Mulege on the Baja California Sur peninsula.

The accident happened on Thursday, June 16, according to local reports.

Per reports, the van flipped after running off the road in a desert area. Crew members had been working in the nearby Santa Rosalia area at the time of the crash.

Among the deceased are Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar, the Baja California Department of Culture reported on Friday, June 17.

According to the casting call, the show is being produced by an independent production company.

The Blast previously reported on Hutchins’ untimely death at the hands of Alec Baldwin on the set of “Rust.”

Hutchins served as the cinematographer on the project.

Baldwin was pointing a gun at the camera when it discharged a live round and struck Hutchins, killing her, and injuring director Joel Souza.

The gun was supposed to shoot a blank, but a live round was discharged from the gun.

In April, the Santa Fe police department released audio and video footage from officers at the scene.

Photos of the bloody bandages and clothes left behind where the shooting took place were also released.

Many have wondered and questioned how live bullets got into the prop gun.

The “Rust” armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, has faced scrutiny for her “odd” behavior on the day of the deadly shooting.

It’s still to be determined if Baldwin will be criminally charged in the investigation.

It was determined that the film’s producers and crew completely failed to follow industry guidelines in handling firearms and preventing live ammunition to be on set according to the New Mexico Environment Department’s Occupational Health and Safety Bureau’s report.

Many social media users questioned if guns on sets were necessary, especially when they were being used without proper safety training.

There have been widespread calls for stricter movie set gun regulations since Hutchins’ October 2021 death.

According to LAist, lawmakers drafted two California Senate bills to establish mandatory rules for guns and ammunition on film sets. The proposed legislation included penalties for safety violations, and mandated on-set supervisors when weapons were used.

Unfortunately, both bills did not get past the California Senate Appropriations Committee.
