Camille Vasquez Returns To Defend Johnny Depp From Assault Charges In Latest Court Battle

Actor Johnny Depp is heading out of a courtroom in Fairfax, Virginia, and into one in Los Angeles.

He’s still going to have his trusty lawyer Camille Vasquez by his side. Vasquez was promoted to firm partner after the defamation trial against the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor’s ex-wife, Amber Heard.

Despite a failure in his U.K. libel suit against the British tabloid “The Sun” for calling him a “wife-beater” in 2020, Depp was awarded over $10 million dollars from a jury who found that Heard’s 2018 op-ed in the Washington Post was defamatory towards Depp when she called herself a survivor of domestic violence, even though she never mentioned Depp’s name in the article. Heard was also awarded $2 million dollars after one of Depp’s attorneys called her abuse claims a “hoax.”

The “Fantastic Beasts” actor has been involved in multiple lawsuits over the years, but this time, he’s facing one for assault.

Camille Vasquez will be representing Depp in an upcoming Los Angeles trial, which was brought against Depp by a film location manager who alleges that “The Lone Ranger” actor assaulted him on set. According to Insider, the film location manager claims that Depp “hit him twice in the ribs, yelled at him, and eventually fired him.”

According to the court documents, the lawsuit was filed by Gregg ‘Rocky’ Brooks, the location manager for Depp’s 2018 film titled “City of Lies.”

Depp starred as Russell Poole in the film, opposite Forest Whitaker, who played Jack Jackson. According to a synopsis for the film:

“Los Angeles Police Department detective Russell Poole has spent years trying to solve his biggest case -- the murders of The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur -- but after two decades, the investigation remains open. Jack Jackson, a reporter desperate to save his reputation and career, is determined to find out why. In search of the truth, the two team up and unravel a growing web of institutional corruption and lies.”

Although it was filmed in 2018, it was not released until March 19, 2021, by director Brad Furman. It currently has a 51% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 80%.

Brooks filed a civil complaint against the 59-year-old actor in the Los Angeles Superior Court, claiming that Johnny Depp physically assaulted him by hitting him twice in the ribs. He also alleged that Depp yelled “I’ll give you $100,000 dollars to punch me right now!” after hitting him.

Brooks is suing for an undisclosed amount of damages related to ten counts of “assault, emotional distress, wrongful termination, and retaliation.”

According to the court documents, Brooks said that he was on the film set in Los Angeles on April 13, 2017, when he told Johnny Depp about “filming restrictions” for the set. Brooks alleges that Depp “became irate and verbally and physically abused him.”

Brooks said that Depp’s breath “reeked of alcohol” and that his bodyguards had to physically restrain him after he was attacked. Brooks also alleges that he was fired after he wouldn’t stay silent about the incident.

A producer for “City of Lies,” Miriam Segal, has also been named as a defendant in this case.

According to Brooks’ lawyers, “On the Monday following the incident, April 16, 2017, plaintiff returned to the production office to work on wrapping out the show. Upon arrival, the plaintiff was informed that Segal wanted him to write and sign a declaration stating that he would not sue the production. When the plaintiff declined to write such a statement, his services were terminated immediately.”

It’s unclear if this trial will be as successful as his last one, but Vasquez is hoping that the rumors about her “relationship” with Depp will stop.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Vasquez said that she is “very happy” in her relationship with her current boyfriend and noted that it is “unethical for us to date our clients.”

Although they were seen hugging at certain points of the trial, Vasquez insists she and Johnny Depp are not romantically involved.

Vasquez actually told PEOPLE that she found the “sexist” rumors “unfortunate” and “disappointing.” She added, “But, at the same time, it kind of comes with the territory. I can’t say I was all that surprised.”

“This man was fighting for his life and it broke my heart to see him day in and day out have to sit there and listen to the most horrific allegations being made against him,” Vasquez added. “And if I could provide any bit of comfort, then, of course, I would do that, whether it's holding his hand or letting him know that we were there and we were going to fight for him because he deserved it.”
