Over the weekend, “Squid Game” season 2 officially got the green light.
Many fans are looking forward to another season of the hit Netflix series, which witnessed cash-strapped contestants competing in deadly games to try to win a share of an enormous prize pool.
Series creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk released a message on Sunday along with a brief teaser to confirm that Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, and the Front Man, Lee Byung-hun, would be back along with a host of new characters… and new toys for them to play with.

Hwang’s message says, “It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year,” Hwang’s message begins. “But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”
“As the writer, director, and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout out to fans around the world,” he continued. “Thank you for watching and loving our show.”
“And now, Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming,” he warned. “The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.” Young-hee is the name of the killer doll witnessed in the first game of the competition.

Executive producer Kim Ji-yeon told Tudum that they’ve been facing “a lot of pressure” to make season 2 even better.
“We are working on the script right now and making the form of the story,” Kim explained. “I know that a lot of the different fans and audiences have enjoyed the series very much, but really we’re focusing on how to make it even more joyful to the global audience.”
Last month, Hwang told Vanity Fair that the series could be released in 2023 or maybe even in 2024. He teased the second season, saying, “Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again.”
Hwang Dong-Hyuk Does Have A Second Season Storyline
Although many fans wonder what direction the story will take with a now red-headed Gi-hun returning to the games once more, Hwang told Entertainment Weekly last November that he already come up with a basic idea of where the storyline will go.
“I do have the basic storyline in my head,” he said last November. “I am in the process currently of brainstorming the details.”
“In the first season that we saw Gi-hun is a character whose humanity is shown through or exposed in certain situations,” he explained. “In other words, his humanity is shown through a very passive manner.”
“But I would think that in the second season, what he has learned from the games and his experience in the first season, they will all be put to use in a more active manner,” he continued. “At the same time, as for the Front Man who was also a past winner but became a Front Man, it’s like Darth Vader. Some end up Jedi and some become Darth Vader, right? I think that maybe Gi-hun will go through a certain critical point where he is put through a test as well.”
At this point, that’s all we know about the highly anticipated second season of “Squid Game.” Considering Hwang admitted that a second season might not hit Netflix until sometime in 2024, fans might be waiting a while!
