Colin Trevorrow Responds To Fan Reaction Over Leaked 'Star Wars' Script

Filmmaker Colin Trevorrow first restarted the "Jurassic Park" franchise with "Jurassic World" in 2015.
Due to the success of the film, Trevorrow was asked to write and direct the final film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Unfortunately, he and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had a difference of opinion. Trevorrow exited the project, his script - tentatively titled "Duel of the Fates" - was scrapped, and J.J. Abrams was tasked with finishing out the nine-episode Skywalker Saga after having previously rebooted the franchise with 2015's "The Force Awakens."
The final film, "The Rise of Skywalker," was widely regarded as a lackluster conclusion. When the script Trevorrow wrote with longtime collaborator Derek Connolly leaked online, many fans felt that it would have been a better end for many beloved characters.
Now that "Jurassic World Dominion" is out in theaters, Trevorrow is commenting on the positive reaction his Star Wars script received.
Colin Trevorrow Admits ‘I Do Make These Movies For Audiences’
Trevorrow told The Hollywood Reporter that he does care what an audience thinks of his films.
"Honestly, if any director tells you that they don't care what the audience thinks, or even people who watch movies and write about them for a living, then I'm not sure if they're being fully honest with themselves," Trevorrow said.
"I do make these movies for audiences, but I also make them for people who think about film all the time and watch movies the way that I do," he continued.
"Any time you do something that's received well, it's going to encourage you and hopefully assure you that not only was there a reason why you started doing this in the first place, but your imposter syndrome is only partially real and you're not a complete fraud," he said with a laugh, adding, "And I think we all have those moments."
In addition to the script, several pieces of concept art related to the draft also leaked online.
Some of these images show Captain Phasma, alive on Coruscant, overseeing an execution via lightsaber guillotine.
Another photo shows Luke Skywalker, still alive, and training Rey to use the Force. Kylo Ren was also witnessed undergoing training of his own by fighting a hallucination of Darth Vader in a cave.
In another piece of concept art, Luke and Kylo Ren are dueling one another. Luke manages to catch Kylo Ren's lightsaber with his mechanical hand.
One of the most poignant pieces of art features First Order General Hux committing seppuku on a lightsaber as the First Order experiences a crushing defeat from General Organa's Resistance at the Battle of Coruscant.
Colin Trevorrow Is ‘Deeply Satisfied’ Working On ‘Star Wars’
Earlier in the year, Trevorrow had told UPROXX that he was "deeply satisfied" to have gotten the experience to work with Lucasfilm, even if they didn’t use his script.
"It was complicated," he said of leaving the project. "But, honestly, I mean, since we're talking now in 2022, I can say honestly I'm very grateful to [Lucasfilm president] Kathy [Kennedy] for recognizing that she and I were never going to make a movie that we were both proud of together."
"And she's been doing this for so long and she cares about me and I care about her and her family," he continued. "And [producer] Frank [Marshall] and I are partners still."
"I'm a part of this group of incredible filmmakers, so it was a complicated moment, but now, having been able to do this and really feeling like this is what ... I'm glad I did this," he added. "I'm deeply, deeply satisfied for having done this."
"I appreciate that she had the wisdom to see something that, honestly," he went on, admitting, "I'm not sure I could've seen because I was so dialed in to the story I wanted to tell."
Although fans will never get a chance to see if Trevorrow would have given the Star Wars characters a better send-off than J.J. Abrams, fans can still head to theaters to see the main cast of "Jurassic Park" and "Jurassic World" reunite for one final battle against the dinosaurs.
His latest movie, "Jurassic World Dominion," was released in theaters on June 10.
