Justin Bieber Reveals He Has Facial Paralysis From 'Pretty Serious' Illness

Singer Justin Bieber needs to take it easy for a while.

On Friday afternoon, the “Yummy” singer posted a video to his Instagram page revealing that he’s been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome… and he can’t move one side of his face.

As the “Peaches” singer explained, the facial paralysis is caused by a virus that attacked a nerve on the inside of his ear. He’s had to postpone several shows over the past week due to the syndrome, which he described as “pretty serious.”

It’s not clear how long it is going to take to get better, but he shows fans that he’s only able to blink with one of his eyes. “I can’t smile on this side of my face… this nostril will not move,” he said as he tried to move his face for the camera.

Justin said he made the video for the “frustrated” fans who are upset he canceled his shows to show that he is “physically not capable” of performing right now.

“I wish this wasn’t the case but obviously my body’s telling me I gotta slow down and I hope you guys understand and I’ll be using this time to just rest and relax and get back to one-hundred percent so I can get back to do what I was born to do,” he told his fans. “But, in the meantime, this ain’t it.”

Justin said “I’m going to get better,” adding that he’s been doing a ton of facial exercises to “get my face back to normal.” He said it will get better. Doctors aren’t sure how long it will be, but he said, “it’s going to be okay. I trust God and I trust that it’s all for a reason. I’m not sure what that is right now, but in the meantime, I’m going to rest and I love you guys. Peace.”

This isn’t the only health scare that the Biebers have been suffering lately. Earlier this year, his wife, model Hailey Bieber, took to YouTube to describe her own personal health scare that landed her a trip to the hospital.

On Wednesday, April 27, the supermodel uploaded a 12-minute video to YouTube titled "telling my story." In the video, she explains that she had to undergo heart surgery after a blood clot in her brain caused a mini-stroke.

Hailey revealed that she actually had a hole in her heart and required a patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure procedure to close it. “It went very smoothly,” she assured her fans. “I’m recovering really well, really fast.”

Back in March, Hailey had fans concerned when she was rushed to the hospital with stroke-like symptoms. During her stay, doctors discovered that she had a blood clot that traveled to her brain and caused a transient ischemic attack (TIA).

However, no one could figure out how a healthy 25-year-old developed a blood clot. Hailey explained that she went to UCLA for “more in-depth testing … to find a PFO.” She called the PFO a “flap between the right and left chambers of the heart.”

“Typically, at birth, it’s supposed to close on its own,” she explained, adding that hers had not.

“They found that I had a grade five which is the highest grade you can have,” she went on. “Mine was fairly large. What typically happens is the heart will filter the blood clot to the lungs and the lungs will absorb it because they’re so big and they can handle it.”

Unfortunately, one blood clot “escaped through the hole in my heart and traveled to my brain and that is why I suffered a [mini-stroke].”

Hailey said that she was “just grateful that they found it” and explained that doctors performed a procedure where they use “a button” to close the flap in her heart to prevent it from happening again. “I’m really relieved I will be able to just move on from this really scary situation and live my life,” she added.
