Popular actress Nicole Kidman has revealed that her now infamous Miu Miu outfit for the Vanity Fair 2022 Hollywood Issue was actually her choice. During a recent interview with Baz Luhrmann for Vogue Australia, the famous actress revealed her true thoughts about the outfit and the cover shoot.

When the cover issue was released, many of the magazine's readers and Kidman's fans weren't pleased with the outfit choice of the consistently glamorous actress. It was a look that was very different from Kidman's usual clothing choices.

Katie Grand Styled Nicole Kidman's Look

The 54-year-old actress recalled the controversial pleated bra top and low-waisted skirt combination and said, "I showed up and they had another outfit for me and I was like, 'No, no, I like this one! Am I allowed to wear that?'"

She continued, "And [the stylist] Katie Grand, who's just fantastic, was on Zoom, and Katie was like "You're willing to wear that?!' And I said, 'Wear it?! I'm begging you to wear it!'" Grand then added gray knee-high socks and pointy loafers to add to Kidman's sexy schoolgirl aesthetic.

In the shoot pictures, Kidman posed in several cute, quirky, and serious poses as she stood between two yellow gold gates. The background of the photos was a beautiful garden with lots of flowers.

Many of Kidman's fans didn't understand or like the outfit and immediately shared their displeasure on Instagram and Twitter. One fan commented under Vanity Fair's Instagram post of the cover and wrote, "Nicole Kidman is incredible but this styling is terrible. I'm shocked she agreed to this."

Another commented, "Who thought this was a good idea? The mind boggles," and yet another read, "She's an accomplished actress who's nominated for an Oscar. Why is she dressed like a school girl [sic]? Not cool."

Not everyone hated it, though, as one fan also commented, "Haters are gonna hate! Nicole is looking amazing!" Some fans also praised the outfit and style on Twitter, with one fan calling it "fabulous" and "an absolute serve."

Nicole Kidman Said She Loved That It Was Bold

The "Eyes Wide Shut" actress herself spoke about the outfit to Luhrmann and said, "I mean, I did walk away when I shot Vanity Fair thinking, 'What was I thinking?! That was ridiculous! What were you doing, Nicole?!' And then I went, 'Eh, oh well!'"

She also said, "Cause you know that part about me where I'm like, 'I'm just going to do what I want to do, ultimately!' And just have some fun. And just commit, like really commit when I show up … But there's got to be some fun. And sometimes it's going to work, and sometimes it isn't. But I love the idea of being bold and not fitting into a box."

Other Celebrities Have Worn Pieces From The Collection

The controversial skirt set itself was designed by Miuccia Prada for the spring/summer 2022 Miu Miu collection. Kidman isn't the only female celebrity who has rocked that particular look, as actress Zendaya and model Hailey Bieber have also been seen wearing similar pieces.

Other female celebrities have worn some of the other outfits from that Miu Miu collection. Model Emily Ratajkowski was one of the first to wear a full head-to-toe piece from the collection, and she wore it to the 2021 CFDA Fashion Awards. Bieber's top and skirt combo from the collection is almost the same as Kidman's outfit, and she wore hers for the luxury label's product campaign.
