Elliot Page Shares Traumatic Moment He Was Forced To Wear A Dress

Actor Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page, just got candid about how he was forced to wear a dress during the press tour for "Juno." Known for his famous role in "Umbrella Academy," the actor first came out as gay in 2014 before transitioning in 2020.

Page officially announced that he was transgender via a letter on Twitter in December 2020. There he revealed his pronouns as he/they and credited the trans community for inspiring him. The 35-year-old also thanked people who supported him in his struggle to reach his most "authentic" self.\

The "Juno" actor recently opened up about his struggles during the "Juno" press tour in 2007 because he was made to wear a dress instead of his preferred suit. Page described the situation as "extremely f--ked up" and that because of it, "Juno's" ensuing popularity didn't bode well for him.

Page recently opened up about how he was made to wear a dress in 2007 while promoting his Oscar-nominated role in "Juno" at the Toronto International Film Festival. According to the actor, he initially wanted to wear a suit, but the request was refused by the team in charge of his outfit.

While covering the issue of  Esquire magazine, the "Umbrella Academy" actor said, "When 'Juno' was at the height of its popularity, during the awards-season time, I was closeted, dressed in heels and the whole look — I wasn't okay, and I didn't know how to talk about that with anyone."

He continued, "I said I wanted to wear a suit, and Fox Searchlight was basically like, 'No, you need to wear a dress.' And they took me in a big rush to one of those fancy stores on Bloor Street [in Toronto]. They had me wear a dress, and … that was that. And then all the 'Juno' press, all the photo shoots— Michael Cera was in slacks and sneakers."

Further on, the actor revealed that the requirement to wear a dress was a surprise to him, mainly because he was new to Hollywood stylists. "I grew up working in Canada!" Page wrote. "It's different. I dressed how I wanted to dress— not dissimilar to now."

The 35-year-old added that while he couldn't pick a terrible day for him, he struggled a lot when "Juno" started blowing up because of the incident.

The "Juno" star said, "This sounds strange to people, and I get that people don't understand. 'Oh f*** you, you're famous, and you have money, and you had to wear a dress, boo-hoo.' I don't not understand that reaction. But that's mixed with: I wish people would understand that that s--t literally did almost kill me."

Page revealed that while people didn't mind rolling their eyes at the situation, he thought it was an extremely terrible moment, "And it's easy for people to roll their eyes, but you know what? No. That was really extremely, extremely f--ked up," he said.

The actor added that he didn't want to treat the situation as a "somewhat normal thing" because, to him, it wasn't. According to him, people's choice of dressing often had nothing to do with what they identified as.

"It's like: No. Regardless of me being trans! I've had people who've apologized about things: 'Sorry, I didn't know, I didn't know at the time.' It doesn't matter! It doesn't matter if I'm trans or cis. Lots of cis women dress how I dress. That has nothing to f--king do with it," he wrote.

While Page was previously known as one of the most visible gay actors, he didn't come out as trans until December 2020. He announced the change via a lengthy letter on Twitter and revealed his preferred pronouns to the public.

The actor wrote, "Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they, and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life." Page also thanked people who supported him during his journey and said he was happy to finally "pursue my authentic self."

The 35-year-old previously came out as gay in 2014 while giving a speech during a Human Rights Campaign conference. In the conference dubbed "Time to Thrive," the actor spoke to support the LGBTQ youths and condemned violence and discrimination against trans people.
