James Earl Jones Reprises Darth Vader Voice For 'Obi-Wan Kenobi'

Actor James Earl Jones is back voicing Darth Vader in episode 3 of the Star Wars Disney+ live-action series "Obi-Wan Kenobi."

Jones has provided the voice of the masked Sith Lord starting with 1977's "A New Hope."

In the episode, Darth Vader finally confronts his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, for the first time since their fight on Mustafar in "Revenge of the Sith."

The show takes place ten years after the events of the film, where Kenobi has been watching a young Luke Skywalker grow up on Tatooine. It isn't until Luke's twin sister, Leia Organa, gets kidnapped, that Kenobi is forced to come out of hiding and confront the past.

You won't find any spoilers here about how their first rematch since Mustafar went down, but we can say that their battle is far from over. There are only six episodes in the "Obi-Wan Kenobi" limited series, so Kenobi's story is - sadly - already half over.

Jones began voicing Darth Vader for 1977's "A New Hope" and reprised his role again for "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi." He also voiced Darth Vader in various other Star Wars projects, including 2016's "Rogue One" and the animated series "Rebels."

According to Deadline, the episode also featured another familiar voice. Actor Zach Braff, best known for his role in "Scrubs," was the voice of Freck, the transport driver seen in episode three. Although he initially seems like a friendly face, he quickly rats Kenobi out to the Empire Stormtroopers.

Although many fans have been praising "Obi-Wan Kenobi" so far, making it the most-watched Disney+ premiere on the streaming service, Moses Ingram, who plays the Force Sensitive Inquisitor Reva, has received a fair amount of harassment for her role in the series.

"The Queen's Gambit" actress shared screenshots of hateful messages she received on her Instagram Stories, some of which included the N-word.

“There’s nothing anybody can do about this,” Ingram said in a video transcribed by The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s nothing anybody can do to stop this hate. I question my purpose in even being here in front of you saying that this is happening. I don’t really know.”

She continued, “The thing that bothers me is this feeling inside of myself, that no one has told me, but this feeling that I have to shut up and take it, that I have to grin and bear it. And I’m not built like that. So, I wanted to come on and say thank you to the people who show up for me in the comments and the places that I’m not going to put myself. And to the rest of y’all, y’all weird.”

Shortly after, the official Star Wars Twitter account decided to step in. They tweeted, "We are proud to welcome Moses Ingram to the Star Wars family and excited for Reva’s story to unfold. If anyone intends to make her feel in any way unwelcome, we have only one thing to say: we resist."

They added, "There are more than 20 million sentient species in the Star Wars galaxy, don’t choose to be a racist."

Star Ewan McGregor, who plays the titular Kenobi, also decided to speak out to support his co-star.

“Moses is a brilliant actor. She is a brilliant woman. And she is absolutely amazing in this series,” he said. “She brings so much to the series, she brings so much to the franchise. And it just sickened me to my stomach that this had been happening. I just want to say as the lead actor in the series, as the executive producer on the series, that we stand with Moses. We love Moses.”

“And if you’re sending her bullying messages, you’re no Star Wars fan in my mind,” he added. “There’s no place for racism in this world. And I totally stand with Moses.”
