On May 24, the “Top Gun” sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” finally hit theaters.
The movie features a star-studded cast of Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell. The film was directed by Joseph Kosinski.
According to the synopsis, “After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it.”
What Do Critics Think Of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’?
It seems that audiences and critics alike are fawning over the “Top Gun” sequel. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave it a 97% score while audiences gave it a 99% rating.
Many viewers had nothing but positive things to say about “Top Gun: Maverick” and believe it holds up to the original.
“The original ‘Top Gun’ was cinematic perfection, and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ honors the original very well. The CGI is done well, there is a bunch of live-action flying, and there are a variety of airplanes that are exciting to see,” wrote Drew. “This movie benefits greatly in the theaters, especially because of the sound of the airplanes. If I were to nitpick, I wasn't a big fan of who they chose for Penny. The chemistry was just okay and I never felt the emotion from the actress in the way that I did with Charlie in the original. Still, most of the acting choices were fantastic, especially Miles Teller who plays Rooster, Goose's son. There were no truly terrible actors, either, so that helped keep the full 5 stars for me.”
A viewer called P A wrote, “Absolutely nailed it. The twist and turns really took us for a ride, it was great to hear a theatre clapping. Fantastic performance by Miles Teller & Monica Barbaro to carry us across the finish line.”
Vickie loved the movie, but apparently not all the swear words. “Loved that it brought back all the characters, music, story, & American strength we loved,” Vickie wrote. “The only downside was taking The Lord's name in vain and the F word. Cheapens the brilliance of the movie.”
Toon N wrote, “It's a great sequel. Gives a very good mood and experience. There is a scene that reminds me of the first part. The sound elements and effects fit the movie perfectly. There are more and more exciting scenes at the end of the movie. Good actors. But in terms of photography, it's good enough, but there should be some beautiful maneuver scenes.”
'In some ways, it is superior to the original movie'
Dominic called it the “Greatest sequel of all time. From beginning to end I had a smile and tears with how wonderful this was made. The wait was long for part 2 and surprisingly it was worth it!! Also see it in Dbox.
“Top Gun Maverick is an absolute MASTERPIECE of a sequel to an already great movie from 30 years ago. Not only does it pay homage to the original Top Gun but it goes so much more beyond that,” wrote Ben R. “Through the entire movie I was going through so many emotions but for the most I had the biggest smile on my face. It felt like the first time when I was a kid going to the movie theatre for the first time. All the excitement and amazement were re-live while I was watching this wonderfully put together movie.”
“The humorous, emotional and fast paced action parts which had me on the edge of my seat kept me engage from the beginning to the end. Once the credits rolled, I just couldn't believe what I had seen and it left me wanting more,” Ben continued. “All I wanted was to rewatch it again and again. I am so thankful for Tom Cruise, Joseph Kosinski, Jerry Bruckheimer and the entire cast and crew that we are still able to get this type of real cinema in 2022 where most of the huge blockbusters are made mostly by CGI. I tip my hat to them for having gone above and beyond to give us one h--- of an ride.”
A user called Google wrote, “Although the flight scenes would probably cause the aircraft shown to disintegrate, the action and fast pace of the movie makes it a very satisfying experience. In some ways it is superior to the original Movie.”
Conner R wrote, “If you like airplanes boy is this movie for you. The final 45 minutes is the best dog fighting in any movie and the fact that they shot a lot of it practically makes it even cooler. My only qualm is that "I feel the need! The need for speed!" didn't make it in with all the other callbacks this movie had.”
When fans are heading to the theaters this Memorial Day, it sounds like “Top Gun: Maverick” is a great movie that everyone will enjoy!
