Actor Johnny Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard continue to make headlines as the trial approaches closing arguments on Friday.
The couple has been facing each other at the Fairfax County Circuit Court for most of the past month. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor is suing his ex-wife for $50 million over a December 2018 op-ed Heard wrote for the Washington Post where she claims that she is a domestic violence survivor. Although she did not mention Depp by name, he claims that he has lost movie roles due to the “clear implication” that he was her abuser. Heard claims that she has also been losing out on movie roles, including several scenes from the upcoming “Aquaman” sequel, and is countersuing for $100 million dollars.
Depp’s legal team only has one more witness to call to the stand before Heard’s team has a chance to call final witnesses. Closing arguments are still scheduled for Friday. Depp's first and final witness on Thursday morning was a hand surgeon that testified that the injury that occurred to Depp's finger could have occurred the way that Depp alleged. Heard's team called two more witnesses to the stand shortly after to discuss her bruise photos and her mental health.
Shortly after, Amber Heard took the stand herself to testify that she received hundreds of death threats, thousands since the trial started, including one that said they want to put her baby in a microwave.
Amber Heard Answers Questions From Camille Vasquez
Depp's attorney, Camille Vasquez, questioned Amber Heard about the paparazzi arriving at the courthouse when she filed her restraining order. Heard said that she did not call TMZ or paparazzi or any other news source; however, she testified that she did inform Depp's legal team that she was filing a restraining order. She said that she brought her publicist with her "in case" things "blew up."
"What actual survivor of domestic violence wants that?" she asked when Vasquez accused her of asking paparazzi to come and take photos of her face.
When asked about the video that Heard filmed of Depp that somehow ended up with TMZ, Vasquez said that the video TMZ received was incomplete and accused Heard of editing out anything that would make her look bad before sending it to the outlet. "You're very wrong," Heard told her.
Vasquez Questions Heard Over Lack Of Visible Bruises
Vasquez shows Heard a paparazzi photo with her friend, Rocky Pennington, which Vasquez says was taken a day after the TRO. Vasquez pointed out that no bruise can be seen in the photo. Heard said that she was wearing make-up and insisted that she had "no idea" when that photo was taken. Another photo was taken with Josh Drew also shows Heard without any visible bruises, although Heard still insisted she was wearing make-up at the time.
Under cross-examination, Heard said that Depp only made allegations that she was also abusive to him and that he did not make any statements about her alleged abuse at the time of their divorce. She was also questioned about how she didn't expect so many witnesses to come forward to support Johnny Depp. Heard said that Depp was a powerful man and it was not a surprise to her that people would try to "curry favor" from powerful men.
After that, Vasquez wrapped questioning and Rottenborn resumed questioning. Heard testified that she never faked an injury and said "No, absolutely not" if she ever "faked" any injuries or photos. When asked, Heard said that Depp abused her emotionally, psychically, and psychologically.
She called Mr. Waldman's statement an "echo" of "the violence and the abuse" that she allegedly suffered in the relationship. At that point, Rottenborn wrapped questioning and the defense rested. The trial is done for the day. Closing arguments begin on Friday morning at 9 AM. The jury will have the rest of the afternoon to deliberate. The jury has Saturday, Sunday, and Monday off, as it is Memorial Day, and will resume deliberating on Tuesday.
