Jensen Ackles Claims He Never Auditioned For The 'Captain America' Role

Actor Jensen Ackles is responding to rumors that he had auditioned for the role of Captain America.

Although he has appeared in shows like “Dark Angel,” Ackles is best known for playing Dean Winchester in The CW series “Supernatural” from 2005 to 2020. He is also the executive producer and narrator behind the “Supernatural” prequel series, “The Winchesters.”

That’s not the only role that Ackles will be taking on. He is also starring as a different version of Captain America in “The Boys.”

In season 3 of “The Boys,” Ackles is starring as Soldier Boy, who is modeled off of Captain America. He will make his debut as the new Cap when the series debuts on Amazon Prime Video on June 3.

Fans have been blowing up social media with claims that Ackles had once tried out for the role of the Marvel Captain America, which ultimately went to actor Chris Evans. However, Ackles told Entertainment Weekly that he never actually did audition for the role.

“Did I audition for Captain America?” Ackles asked. “No, I did not.” He later admitted that he wasn’t even sure it was a role that they were holding auditions for. “I don’t necessarily know. Was that an auditioning kind of thing?” he asked. “I feel like they just met with people on that.”

Due to his commitments with “Supernatural” and other projects, Ackles admitted that he “never got the opportunity to even talk to anybody” about starring in the Marvel franchise.

Even if he had been able to audition, Ackles cast doubt that he actually would have accepted the role.

“I was not available, anyway. So, I don't think they were going to work around my schedule. Doesn't seem like a kind of property that would do that,” he explained. “I would've loved to have been in the mix on that because Chris [Evans] and I used to go against each other for quite a bit on a lot of different things back in the day. But, unfortunately, I didn't get to fight him on that one.”

However, Ackles will now get his opportunity to give his own unique take on the character when he stars as Soldier Boy in “The Boys.” In this universe, superheroes are made by the Vought International Corporation through a serum called Compound V that gives people superhuman powers. Soldier Boy was the first superhero that Vought had created.

Ackles jokingly described his character as “Captain America on his a--. It’s as if Captain America gave up super-heroism and was just your drunk and inappropriate uncle.”

Although Soldier Boy led Vought’s first team of superheroes during World War II, the Boys – consisting of Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie (Jack Quaid), Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara), Frenchie (Tomer Capone), and Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso) – will encounter him in the present day.

Ackles described his character as “old school,” adding, “He's from an era that is being close to forgotten, a time passed. He was World War II. He partied with Hefner in the Playboy mansion. This was just a different type of character. And he certainly represents, I think, a lot of that toxic masculinity that is so deeply rooted in a lot of what our society feels.”

The first three episodes of season 3 of “The Boys” will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on June 3. After that, one episode will be released a week until the end of the season.
