On Saturday, Selena Gomez took the stage to host “Saturday Night Live.”
In the almost-five minute monologue, which can be seen below, the singer and actress impersonated her “Wrecking Ball” singer Miley Cyrus, revealed that she’s looking for her soulmate, and still managed to find time to sing the “Barney” theme song!
Selena Gomez Received Hosting Advice From ‘Saturday Night Live’ Alums
On May 14, the “Wizards of Waverly Place” star made her hosting debut on “Saturday Night Live.” She opened the show by plugging her new Hulu series, “Only Murders in the Building,” which also stars “SNL” alums Steve Martin and Martin Short.
“This is a big moment for me,” she told the cheering audience as she stepped on stage, noting that she used to watch the show with her mother every week growing up. “I actually started acting when I was seven, and I’ve been lucky enough to work with some Hollywood icons, [like] Steve Martin, Martin Short and, of course, Barney.”
The show then cut to a throwback photo of a young Selena with Barney in one of her first appearances on the show “Barney & Friends” back in the early 2000s.
“That was the first show I was on, and now I’m on a show called Only Murders in the Building,” she continued. “I was so honored to work with Steve Martin and Martin Short, especially after I googled them to find out who they were.”
Selena joked that, when she told a friend the title of a show, they asked her, “Mm, that sounds sexy. Any hot co-stars?'”
“And I was like, ‘Depends,'” she continued. “‘Do you love the banjo?'”
She said that it was “cool” working with two great comedians and revealed that she asked them for advice before her big debut. “When I found out I was hosting, I immediately asked for their advice,” she explained. “Steve said, ‘Trust no one,’ and Marty said, ‘I think Steve Martin has been using my credit card.'”
She revealed that she also asked one of her “oldest friends,” Miley Cyrus, for advice. She then did her best Miley impersonation, saying, “Just be yourself and have fun.”
‘I’m Looking For My Soulmate, But At This Point I Will Take Anyone’
Selena Gomez revealed that she is single and went on to claim that the “Saturday Night Live” stage is a great place to find love, given how many famous faces have met their significant others in the studio.
“Emma Stone met her husband here,” she recalled. “Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost, and Pete [Davidson] and… Machine Gun Kelly.”
“Since I don’t want to get on the dating apps, I’m putting out into the universe that I’m manifesting love,” she continued. “And I would like to say that I’m looking for my soulmate, but at this point, I will take anyone.”
At that point, Kyle Mooney stepped onto the stage, saying, “Uh, I’ll do it.”
“What?” Selena asked.
“Be with you, like you said,” he clarified. “I’ll do it.”
Selena explained that she was “sort of joking” when she said she’d take “anyone” and pointed out that Kyle is married.
Then entered “the new cast member, Jeff,” whose real name was James Austin Johnston. Selena was quick to point out that he too was married.
The third potential love interest was Punkie Johnson. Selena noted, “Honestly, it’s kind of a vibe, but let’s see how the afterparty goes.”
Before resuming the show, the 29-year-old took a moment to say how grateful she was to get an opportunity to host.
“I’ll admit, I am a little nervous, but I just think back to those words of wisdom that one of my co-stars would tell me before every show,” she concluded. “I love you, you love me, we’re a happy family.”
She then led the audience in a sing-a-long of the “Barney” theme song to close out her monologue. Although Selena definitely has the musical talent to be a host and a musical guest like Lizzo did earlier in the season, Post Malone was tapped as the musical guest for the night.
The “Barney” sing-a-long proved to be a hit with audiences. One user commented, “The end with the whole audience singing was so touching. It just shows how unified we all are even with just a few notes to kickstart it.”
