Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” finally hit theaters on Friday, May 6.
The film is directed by Sam Raimi and features a cast of Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, among others. The official synopsis for the film reads, “Dr. Stephen Strange casts a forbidden spell that opens a portal to the multiverse. However, a threat emerges that may be too big for his team to handle.”
Critics Weigh In On ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’
As of Friday afternoon, the film had a 77% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 89%. Reviews seemed to be polarizing, with some audiences loving the film and others criticizing its storyline.
“As a huge MCU, scary movie, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Lizzie Olsen fan, I was beyond excited to see this movie,” wrote Brittany M. “I spent way too many hours looking at fan theories on YouTube and Reddit (something I've never done for any other Marvel film).”
“To put it lightly, I was massively disappointed,” Brittany continued. “The script was just awful. Michael Waldron should stay far, far away from another Marvel film. Wandavision created a wonderful, three-dimensional, and complex version of Wanda, who was unrecognizable in this film.”
“The pacing felt so rushed, and there were too many plot holes to forgive,” Brittany added. “On top of that, the CGI was laughable at times and took me out of the movie. It's so sad because every actor in this movie is so talented, the script was just sooooooo bad. The only thing I liked? Elizabeth Olsen's acting. I could watch her all day. I can imagine she wasn't thrilled about the script and how dirty it did Wanda.”
Ouwen Y said, “It's a pretty good movie. Although the story moved too slow at times, too fast at others, the general storyline was good and so were the special effects. Elizabeth Olsen plays a brilliant villainous version of the Scarlet Witch and Benedict Cumberbatch was fantastic as always. It was great to see the multiverse finally explored in its fullest for the first time and I hope for many more movies involving it.”
Some Reviewers Loved The Movie, Although It Might Be Too ‘Graphic’ For Younger Viewers
Toby S called the movie “very entertaining and fun. Brilliant cameos that I hope we see again in some form. Whilst it wasn't everything I hoped for, I am really struggling to think of things I didn't like in the film. I highly recommend watching it although some knowledge of multiverses would be good!”
“Great movie - unlike anything else in the MCU by a long shot,” wrote Steven F. “Raimi's style is on full display, so if you're a fan of his work, you'll love this. Plenty of shocks and surprises left, even after what the shown in the trailer. Definitely screen it before you take your young ones, it's graphic. Loved this movie, and look forward to more!”
Burger wrote, “Sam Raimi through and through Feige really let him off the leash for this one. Unlike any MCU movie that came before it, makes it a really refreshing entry into the series. Could do with some more of this Wanda.”
Adam D wrote, “Movie was great but comes with a BIG BUT! Visually stunning as always but without giving anything away, the story was rushed and was constantly go go go without having time to absorb and take in what was happening. But scarlet witch was the absolute star of that movie.”
Despite the polarizing reviews, it seems that everyone can agree that “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is like no other Marvel movie that has come before it. For those still undecided about whether or not the latest Marvel film is worth the price of admission, the trailer for the movie is available to watch below.
