Johnny Depp Revisits Severed Finger Incident For A Second Day In Court

Actor Johnny Depp took the stand again today to be cross-examined in his defamation suit against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

The couple is facing each other at the Fairfax County Circuit Court. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor is suing his ex-wife for $50 million over a December 2018 op-ed Heard wrote for the Washington Post where she claims that she is a domestic violence survivor. Although she did not mention Depp by name, he claims that he has lost movie roles due to the “clear implication” that he was the “Aquaman” actress’ abuser.

On Tuesday, April 19, Depp began his testimony, where he talked about the childhood abuse he suffered, his drug addiction, and the overwhelming fame that he experienced following his starring role as Captain Jack Sparrow.

After being questioned by his attorney, Jess Meyers, the “Fantastic Beasts” actor is now being cross-examined by Heard’s lawyer, Ben Rottenborn. The morning portion of the cross-examination can be read here.

After the lunch break, Rottenborn questioned Depp about his "Pirates 5" and read emails out loud that showed Depp openly criticizing the role.

The questions circled back around to Depp's drug use, with Rottenborn suggesting that Depp was requesting cocaine and ecstasy after his finger was injured in the incident that was discussed in-depth yesterday. Rottenborn said that, during the incident, Depp had consumed two to three shots of vodka prior to his finger being injured. Depp agreed.

After Rottenborn discussed the finger positioning of Depp's hands, he claimed that Heard was 7-10 feet away from him. Rottenborn expressed skepticism that only his middle finger was damaged and none of his other fingers were hurt. Rottenborn said that there was no glass was found in his finger but Depp said that he could not confirm that. He did, confirm, that "nothing else was severed."

Rottenborn said that Depp dipped his finger in paint. Depp said, "Yes." Rottenborn then asked if Depp had written on objects in the house using paint and his blood. Depp said, "Yes."

After the incident, Depp said there was "quite a bit of damage to the house during the entire incident." Depp said there was a coffee cup or a plate sticking out of the TV screen. However, Depp said that he did not remember the window breaking. He says went into "shock" or had "some kind of a nervous breakdown" after he realized his finger had been severed.

When questioned about defacing a painting by drawing a p---- on a painting, Depp said that he does not recall doing that. Depp said it was not a blackout; "it was shock." Depp admitted to writing messages on the bathroom mirror and "Ms. Heard added to them." He suggested that it was possible that the painting had been defaced by Ms. Heard.

In the U.K. trial, however, Depp testified that he "could have" defaced the painting when asked.

When asked if he had ever seen Heard "inflict harm" on herself, Depp did not provide an answer, saying that "harm" was a "broad word." In the U.K. trial, Rottenborn brought up testimony where Depp said "no" when being asked if she had inflicted harm on herself.

Rottenborn then questioned Depp about the multiple stories that surrounded the incident, between his hand being caught in an accordion door to a statement that it had been accidentally cut off with a kitchen knife. Depp denied that the knife had been his statement and suggested that it was another member of his team who had perhaps made that statement to his doctor.

At one point, he played an audio clip between Heard and Depp where he claims that Depp said that he cut his own finger off. Depp disputed that he said that. The audio clip is mumbled and the exact wording of the statement is not clear.

Rottenborn then transitioned into Depp being "insecure" in his relationship with Heard, and played an audio recording where Depp can be heard saying, "I become irrational when you're doing movies, I become jealous, and f---ing crazy, and weird, we fight a lot more..."

After discussing the incident that happened on December 15, 2015, Depp "vehemently disagreed" with the assertion that he had headbutted her. Rottenborn then played an audio clip where Heard and Depp discuss the headbutt.

Rottenborn claimed he heard Depp say, "I headbutted you in the f---ing forehead ... that doesn't break a nose." Depp agreed that he said those words, but said that he was only using the words that Ms. Heard was using. Rottenborn then played another audio clip that featured an argument between Depp and Heard, with each seeming to indicate that they had photos and evidence against the other.

Rottenborn then read a text message from Depp to Heard's father on December 30, 2015, saying that he "f---ed up" and "went too far" in his fight with Heard. He promised that they will never happen again and offered his "sincerest apologies" for letting him down. Depp was quick to point out that it never says that it was a physical fight and that "fights can be arguments."

Heard's attorney played a video recording where things can be heard being thrown around. In the audio recording, Heard can be saying that Depp is "smashing s---." After the video recording was played, Depp asked for a date for the recording. Rottenborn said that the event happened at Depp's house. When asked if he was being violent, Depp replied, "clearly I was having a bad time."

"I did assault a couple of cabinets, but I did not assault Ms. Heard," Depp said. He said there was "a possibility" that he was drunk in the video. He said he "thought it necessary" to pour himself a large glass of wine and questioned Rottenborn's term "mega-pint."

Rottenborn continued to read several text messages from Depp to Heard, including one that read, "I have other uses for your throat that do not include injury." After he read it twice, Depp asked him to read it again, earning laughter from the audience.

In another audio clip, Depp calls Heard a "c---" and said that he "f---ing hates" her. In the next audio clip, Depp can be heard throwing up before a toilet flushes.

In another text message, Depp referred to Heard as a "lesbian camp counselor." When asked about the term, Depp said that Heard had referred to herself in that way.

In the last clip of the day, Rottenborn asked if this was the incident where Depp had cut himself with a knife. "I do not recall," Depp answered. In the audio that was played, Heard can be heard repeatedly asking Depp not to cut himself and to put the knife down.

The clip lasted for several minutes. Since it was after 5 PM, the judge called it for the day. The trial does not run on Friday, so the trial will resume again on Monday.
