Director Zack Snyder just revealed a glimpse into his new film, “Rebel Moon.”

Over a decade ago, Snyder pitched the idea for a “Star Wars” film for mature audiences to creator George Lucas. However, Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, which seemed to put an end to Snyder’s “Star Wars” film.

Snyder, however, repurposed the idea for the film and developed it into a two-part movie series he calls “Rebel Moon.” On Tuesday, April 19, Snyder revealed that the film had officially started production.

“When George Lucas created star wars it was cause he couldn't do Flash Gordon. When Zack Snyder created Rebel Moon it was cause he couldn't do Star Wars,” another fan wrote. “We're witnessing cinematic history. We're living it. Breathe it in.”

“I believe in you Zack you always make an uncompromising and cultural phenomenon,” another shared. “Won't be any different now.”

On December 29, the “Justice League” director took to social media platform Vero to share a first look at some “Rebel Moon” concept art.

“We are in full swing heading towards principal photography in a few months,” Snyder wrote in the caption.

In the photo, black soldiers wearing capes and carrying large firearms are seen marching toward the viewer. Large black columns can be seen protruding through the earth at different points. The air is thick with dust and smoke, giving the atmosphere a bit of a horror video game vibe.

At one point, the soldiers marching through the area were most likely envisioned to be Stormtroopers; however, these soldiers seem similar in construction to the Death Troopers that were introduced later in the “Star Wars” franchise with their black armor.

According to Deadline, “Atomic Blonde” star Sofia Boutella is playing the leader of a peaceful colony that is located on the edge of the galaxy. When a tyrannical army called the Regent Balisarius (not the Galactic Empire) threatens their existence, they’re forced to take a stand against their oppressors.

They send a young woman to find warriors (not Jedi) on neighboring planets to help them defend their home. Although there are still subtle nods to its “Star Wars” origins woven throughout the plot, fans can’t wait to see what original elements the “Dawn of the Dead” director has in store for fans.

Cary Elwes, who has since gone on to star in Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” has become attached to the project. He will be joined by Corey Stoll, who starred in “The Strain” series and made an appearance in 2012’s Oscar-nominated “West Side Story.”

“Game of Thrones” actor Michiel Huisman and “Sense8” actor Alfonso Herrera are also recent additions to the cast, which stars Sofia Boutella as the leading character. The ensemble cast also includes “Justice League” actor Ray Fisher, “Sons of Anarchy” actor Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Rupert Friend, and Stuart Martin.

Although details for the other actors have yet to be revealed, it’s been announced that Cary Elwes will play the “king” of Snyder’s new Empire.

The first part of “Rebel Moon” is expected to be released on Netflix sometime in 2023. There is no word on when part 2 will be released.
