Roberts has been enduring an emotional and physically draining ride ever since her partner was diagnosed with breast cancer, but the situation took an unexpected turn.
The Tuskegee native, who recently celebrated 20 years of working with "Good Morning America," admitted to the news outlet that Laign experienced issues while undergoing chemotherapy. In the journalist's words,
She's had some complications with the chemotherapy. They're working it out. We're gonna figure it out. The prognosis is still very good.
The TV personality confessed that her lover had been disheartened by the setback in her treatment, but Roberts, a cancer survivor herself, explained that she helped Laign overcomes these difficult moments.
"I'm just thankful that her spirits have been lifted," the 61-year-old said, "Recently, it was a little tough there when — because she just wanted to get through it and to have this wrench thrown in our way."
The "Jeopardy!" guest host continued, noting that these situations came in turns "I was able to tell her, as most people [who] have gone through cancer [know], this happens. There are peaks and valleys, and we went through a valley, but it's more of a peak right now, and I'm just very grateful for all the love and support that she's receiving."
The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame inductee also found the motivation to push through tough moments in her book, "Brighter by the Day."
According to the author, this work helped her maneuver the trails of life, and it would help others as it acted as "a guide to instilling hope and optimism into readers' lives."

The ESPN sportscaster said, "I was struggling, and then I was thinking, 'Robin, you have this book. You're talking to people about their valleys and how to get out of it, and so, why don't you just actually listen to your own words?'
The news anchor added that it was "human nature" to question why bad things were happening. However, Roberts changed her mindset and began thinking, "Why not me?"
"I can handle this," the Tuskegee native declared, "I have the strength. I've been through this. I can help Amber. She's helping me, so I turned 'Why me?' into 'Why not me?' "
