'Aquaman' Jason Momoa To Star In Upcoming ‘Minecraft’ Movie

Actor Jason Momoa is about to star in a coveted new role.

The “Dune” star has been tapped for the leading role in an upcoming “Minecraft” movie for Warner Bros., as per The Hollywood Reporter.

According to THR, the “Aquaman” star is in “final negotiations” to star in the studio’s live-action “Minecraft” movie. So far, “Napoleon Dynamite” filmmaker Jared Hess has been attached to direct the project.

“Dune” producer Mary Parent and Roy Lee are set to direct the movie, which is based on the popular video game of the same name. Jill Messick will receive a posthumous producing credit for developing the film before her death in 2018. Jon Berg, Cale Boyter and Jon Spaihts, have all signed on as executive producers. The game, which was developed from Sweden’s Mojang Studios, has brought on Mojang’s Lydia Winters and Vu Bui to produce the film as well.

Warner Bros. has been trying to develop the film for several years. At one point, “The Adam Project” director Shawn Levy and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Rob McElhenney were set to direct the feature.

Momoa is set to return to screens as Aquaman in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” which is scheduled for a theatrical release in March 2023. The film is the sequel to 2018’s “Aquaman,” which grossed over a billion dollars since its release.

In addition to superhero films, gaming films have also proven to be extremely lucrative for studios in recent years. Ryan Reynold’s 2021 hit “Free Guy,” which was also directed by Shawn Levy, proved to be a massive success for 20th Century Studios. Paramount also saw success with its “Sonic the Hedgehog” sequel, which was released in theaters earlier this month.

It remains to be seen how much of a success “Minecraft” will be with audiences. No plot has been announced at this time. The game debuted over a decade ago in 2011 and allows players to use blocks to create structures, raise animals, and create roller coasters, with the potential limited only to their imagination.

The game became such a sensation that it gained over 100 million users only a few years after it launched. The game proved so popular that Microsoft acquired Mojang for $2.5 billion dollars in 2014.

Although some fans were excited about a “Minecraft” movie, others expressed doubt about its premise.

“The live-action part has me curious,” one user commented.

“Idk Minecraft has a story mode so you never know it could work I mean sonic worked twice and all they needed to do was make something new and original for the sonic live-action take,” another said.

“Why is this kind of s--- getting made but there’s still no Man of Steel 2?” another asked. “Make it make sense.”

“I still don't get how they are going to do it,” another commented. Is Jason Momoa gonna be just voicing the character or is he going to be like wearing a block costume or something?”

“Why?” another asked. Those Minecraft source film YouTubers can make one right now? There's no need for a Minecraft movie.”

Still, not all fans were skeptical about the film.

“This sounds f---ing amazing lmfao,” one user wrote.

“Wow that’s cool Jason Momoa going to be in a Minecraft movie,” another commented. “This should be interesting.”

No release date for the film has yet to be announced.
