Normani Kordei Hamilton, known simply as Normani by fans and celebrities, recently spoke concerning how she grew to accept herself as a beautiful Black woman. The 25-year-old started in the music industry around a decade ago after appearing in the 2012 “The X Factor” singing competition.

Her participation landed her in a girl group called Fifth Harmony. The group disbanded in 2018, after which Normani fully faced her solo career. She’s currently creating her debut album as a solo artist after releasing a number of singles.

Yahoo life recently interviewed the singer as a part of their body image series, It Figures. There, Normani talked about how she grew up being able to love and appreciate her skin. She also shed some light on her latest single, “Fair,” and its importance to her.

Normani recently shed light on how she remained positive about her body over the years. According to Yahoo Life, the former “X Factor” contestant said she remained “kind” to herself, disregarding whether the world felt the same way.

She said, “I constantly remind myself to be kind to myself. Even though you can’t expect the rest of the world to do that, it’s like, at the end of the day, someone has to, so why not show up for yourself? Why not lift yourself up?”

With all the love and support from home, it’s no surprise that the “Wild Side” singer is so proud of her identity. Normani admitted that the positive affirmations from her loved ones were helpful to her identity as a young Black girl. Especially one who was in a largely white school.

The 25-year-old disclosed that she might have gone a different route in how she saw herself without the support. “Not saying that I didn’t have those moments,” she continued. “But I’m definitely really, really grateful for their support and just the fact that they’ve always told me that I was beautiful, and my chocolate skin makes me beautiful aside from what society says.”

Still, in the interview, the former girl band member admitted that being in a girl group was something she always wanted to do. She was previously a participant in competitive gymnastics and dance so being a part of a team is nothing new.

In addition to her love for gymnastics participation, Normani revealed that she “loved lifting women up.” This is evident in her work as a solo artist. The singer is known for including other Black women in on-stage performances and her music videos.

She continued, “We come in so many different shapes and forms and shades, and I think that that deserves to be celebrated. Her most recent partnership saw her together with Frito-Lay’s Cracker Jack. The duo introduced Cracker Jill to celebrate the progress of women in sport.

The 25-year-old just released her single, “Fair.” According to the singer, the song will reveal Normani in her most bare form, both physically and emotionally. It will apparently have equal parts of vulnerability and confidence.

Normani admitted that the song was “liberating” for her but at the same time scary because of how vulnerable she was. She said, “It’s liberating for me, to be completely honest, and also quite scary being so vulnerable. It’s OK to not be OK in front of everyone, too.”

She added that not being perfect has its own version of beauty, making people human. “I think that a lot of the time, people kind of put celebrities on like this pedestal and assume that we don’t feel hurt the same way that they do or betrayed,” she continued. “That’s everything that this record embodies.”
