Team Will Smith vs Team Chris Rock: Fans Are Taking Sides!

On Sunday night, Will Smith appeared to slap Chris Rock at the Oscars after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. After Rock mocked her painful hair loss condition, known as alopecia, Smith said, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f---ing mouth” twice and appeared to assault him on stage.

Although Rock didn’t press charges, the situation did mar the “King Richard” actor when he took to the stage only a few minutes later to receive his first-ever Academy Award. Although Smith gave a tearful apology, many feel that Will Smith’s public image may never recover after this.

On Sunday night, Facebook group Occupy Democrats asked their followers, “Are you on Will Smith or team Chris Rock? Within a few hours, they had already drawn in over 20,000 comments with everyone giving their take of what they saw on stage.

The top comment read, “Will over reacted,” which earned 1.5K likes.

“I'm team Will Smith,” one fan wrote. “Will is the one at home with his wife watching her struggle and cry and try to get the courage to accept what is happening to her body. Then to have to sit a be publicly ridiculed for something she can't control. He could've responded differently, but when emotions get involved things tend to escalate quickly. Chris Rock shouldn't speak about anyone's wife, especially when you consider how he treated his own.”

“Will was wrong and out of line,” another wrote. “Just showing more entitled Americans reacting on emotion, like they do on airplanes, with others watching their lack of good decision making. Chris should press charges.”

“All respect for Will Smith here,” another said.

“Neither. But violence, is not acceptable. Think of the kids and fans who witnessed this,” another noted. “It’s unreal. Not loving him so much right now.”

“Neither, that was a bad joke and a worse reaction, Will’s tears were probably due to the realization that he may have canceled himself… certainly made his Oscar win anticlimactic….” another added.

“Team Will. Good for him to stand up for his wife and Bad for Chris Rock insulting someone with a disease that many people suffer with,” another wrote. “It’s just not right how mean these comedians are getting. I am sick of insult comics and people who pull pranks to embarrass people for a laugh!”

“Team Chris, Will Smith is also a comedian who jokes about other ppl. Why did he get so mad when Chris joke about his wife? Plus, if Will goes free, comedians will not feel safe,” another wrote. “He needs to grown up!”

“The announcers have ALWAYS made jokes of the people in the audience. Every year, every awards,” another pointed out. “Can’t take the heat? Stay the h--- home. Or sit in the back and NOT right up front for all to see. Smith was wrong, DEAD WRONG!”

“Neither. Both crossed the line. We like to think role models can be more respectful of their peers, for some of whom, this was their first big award night,” another shared. “Some common sense and restraint would go a long way. I’m ashamed of myself for even wasting time thinking about it.”

The joke was inappropriate and the slap and inflammatory language was an honest / unfortunate response! Both were wrong! Apology needed on both sides…. To each other! And let’s move on! You gonna learn to stop disrespecting wives and women! We’ve had enough! There are so many layers to unwrap here!!!!!”

“I’m on both teams and pray they quickly reconcile this and love/hug it out,” another wrote. “I’m so sorry this happened and I’m sure they both regret every bit of this. I wished Will would have apologized in his speech. This dampened the excitement that was in the air.”

“Neither. Such a tasteless joke and uncalled for considering it was directed at someone with a health condition,” another offered. “With that being said Will Smith using any form of violence is uncalled for. They both embarrassed themselves.”
