After the relaunch of the Scream horror franchise with the 2022 film “Scream,” the production team recently announced there would be a “Scream 6.” Fans are definitely excited about this, and Scream star Courteney Cox is thrilled to be coming back.

She expressed this in a recent Just for Variety podcast episode with Marc Malkin as the host. The 57-year-old opened up about starring again as Gale Weathers in the legendary franchise, which premiered first in 1996.

Cox revealed that she had just gotten her scripts for “Scream 6” and was very “excited” to start working on it.

Courteney Cox Is Excited For ‘Scream’

Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt will show off their skills again in the upcoming “Scream” film as they were the scriptwriters for “Scream 5.” A day after receiving the script, Cox announced it to fans and said she “[hadn’t] read it yet.” 

She said, “I just got it... I’m excited to read it.” She also teased fans about when the team would be starting production for the film. “I know they’re going to start filming... I think, in June, in Canada,” she said.

Then she made a joke, “I don’t know if I’m supposed to say anything. Let me tell you the killer!” Fans were excited for the announcement of “Scream 6,” which comes after “Scream 5,” which starred returning actors David Arquette and Neve Campbell, alongside Cox.

When asked about the film, Cox focused on the killing off of Arquette’s Dwight Riley (Dewey) character. Fans believed this was because she shared a personal connection with him since Arquette and Cox were married from 1999 to 2013 and share a daughter.

Dewey’s Death Made Courteney Cox Sad

Cox expressed how she felt about the Dewey character and how upset she was when he was killed in “Scream 5”. She said, “It was very sad because Dewey is such a beloved character, and he’s so goofy.” 

She also noted that he was a funny character, and his death took away the only comedic element of the film. “I think that was a downer,” she said, “I thought he brought such a comedic twist to the whole franchise.” Hopefully, his death doesn’t affect the plot of ‘Scream 6’ which was announced by Spyglass and Paramount in February.

A statement given to People explained that the sixth installation of the series was officially in progress and will be directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, the directors from “Scream 5”. The two replaced the late Wes Craven, who directed all the previous Scream movies.

Wes Craven Died Before ‘Scream 5’

‘Scream 5’ was the first ‘Scream’ movie not to be directed by the famous Wes Craven, as the legendary director passed away before the film’s production. His death was announced in 2015, and ‘Scream’ fans sent their condolences to his family on social media. 

Alongside his directing skills, Craven was also an actor, producer, editor, and screenwriter. He was commonly referred to as one of the biggest horror movie genre masters. He was also known for always adding a bit of humor to his horror films. 

The “Scream” production team expressed their sadness about his passing by dedicating the 2022 installment to him at the start of the film’s closing credits. They also appreciated fans for the reception of the movie. 

The ‘Scream’ Team Thanked Fans

The production team was very grateful for fans’ positive reception of “Scream 5”. They were happy that the new directors were able to win fans and expressed their excitement for the upcoming “Scream” movie in a statement.

The statement read, “We are tremendously grateful to the fans worldwide who enthusiastically received our film.” They continued, “We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy, and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family.”
