Lizzo talked about her chance meeting with McCarthy at the Adele show in the Variety interview. She said, "You know what's crazy? Lizzo continued, "And she was like, 'Well, why the hell did I get the part?' which is a classic Melissa McCarthy thing to say. And then I was like, 'Girl because my audition was terrible.' And I say that as Tyler Perry walks by. And I was like — ruined my chances there."

The exchange blossomed into a friendship of some sort because just a week before the casting choices were announced, McCarthy posted a picture of both of them at the MTV Movie and TV awards with a sweet caption.
