While Ryan Reynolds is famous for doing a reasonable number of his stunts himself, he may be depending on his stunt doubles a little more than usual moving forward. This means that fans will see the star doing a lot less of his usual fighting and jumping around in his future movies.
In a recent interview with Variety, the star of "Deadpool" opened up about how he felt about the extent of his "physicality" and stunts in his movies. He factored his age into the equation and decided to do things differently. Read to find out what the actor had to say.
Reynolds Will Do Less Stunts
The 45-year-old father of three revealed that he has decided to leave the difficult stunts to the professionals. He said, "I think it's important to do as much of the stunt work yourself as you can, but I'll step aside when there's something that's just too gnarly, and there's a trained professional ready to go."
He also joked about the downside of doing stunts, "You're not allowed to eat Advil like cereal," he said, "Things start to hurt." He compared his experience doing stunts after he turned 35 to "hell" and explained that "being thrown onto cement wasn't hilarious anymore."
However, Reynolds was strong enough to show off his skills in several films, including the 2015 psychological science-fiction thriller, Self/less. In an interview with People, he talked about how difficult it was for him. "I'm right at that age where I'll do as many takes as they want, but I'm lying on the ground after each one thinking, 'Oh, God. Just get up and get up fast. Don't let them see you in pain.' "
Reynolds Loved Doing Stunts
Despite the pain and struggle, Reynolds revealed that he "loved doing fight stuff" and explained, "So much of it is character-based, so you want to be a part of that and put your fingerprints on that and do it as much as possible."
However, he admitted to being aware of his limit, most especially since he fractured a couple vertebrae during the filming of the 2012 action-thriller film "Safe House." While talking about "Self/less," Reynolds also added that since the accident, he wasn't allowed to do stunts as dangerous anymore.
"There are some stunts I didn't do in Self/less, like the scene where a building explodes and I come flying out of it," he said, "that kind of stuff I just don't mess around with. Even if I wanted to do it, I don't think they would let me," he said, "I have a great stunt guy, Daniel Stevens, who does that stuff and does it really well."
Stunts Have Hurt ReynoldsÂ
The injuries suffered by Reynolds during his 2012 "Safe House" role left many fans worried and was a reason he decided to rely more on his stunt doubles. According to CinemaBlend, Reynolds had a lot to say on the issue. "I've had some bad injuries doing stunts. I broke a couple of vertebrae in my neck. It was a bad situation," he said.
He also noted that it was the seventh time he had been to the hospital that year, and the doctor recommended something different for him. "He writes on a prescription pad, rips off the note, and it reads 'Stuntman.' Point taken. So now I use four different guys that come with me. Thankfully nothing scary happened on this one," he said.
Reynolds Has Four Stunt-Doubles
Reynolds has had four stunt doubles throughout his acting career. First, Jonny James was credited as his stunt double for the 2021 "Red Notice" and "Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard." Martin Ivanov was also credited as his stunt driver in the "Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" movie.
