Reese Witherspoon has made a name for herself in the public eye for playing several thoughtful and savvy characters who are always one step ahead of the curve. Who could forget her career-defining performance in 2001’s “Legally Blonde” where she played Elle Woods, a social butterfly who everyone thought was better suited for hanging out at the mall than walking the halls of a courthouse, or her role in the HBO hit series “Big Little Lies,” where she brought the multi-faceted mother Madeline Martha Mackenzie to life?

Witherspoon isn’t limiting herself to playing characters who think outside of the box. Lately, the actress has been vocal about expressing her interest in NFTs. She has tweeted several times about one of the most discussed phenomenons of the year so far, and now she is gearing up to make NFTs a section of her career portfolio!

This week it was announced Witherspoon’s media company Hello Sunshine will make NFTs an essential component of their company, with the news Witherspoon and her colleagues will collaborate with World of Women, an organization that, according to their website, aims to “Create a beautiful, diverse, [and] empowering collection and thriving community.”
The two companies will come together in order to “Build out the World of Women character universe and franchise into entertainment properties including feature films, scripted and unscripted TV series,” according to Variety.
What Does It All Mean?

If figuring out what an NFT is, makes your head spin, no worries! Multiple celebrities including Justin Beiber and Drake, have delved into this medium, which has been defined as “Unique digital collectibles living on the Ethereum blockchain.”
Learning about and creating NFTs piqued Witherspoon’s interest back in October 2021, when she tweeted, “Just bought my first NFTs! I’m learning so much! Would love to know about amazing women creating NFTs. Talk to me,” and included several emojis including one of a robot, and used hashtags for NFT and one to reach the “Crypto Twitter” community.
One amazing woman who weighed in on Witherspoon’s Twitter thread is “American Pie” and “Josie and the Pussycats” actress Tara Reid. Reid responded, “I have a collection [of NFTs] I’ve been working on since March.”
Witherspoon and Reid aren’t the only famous actresses who have felt intrigued by NFTs. Lohan, who recently made a big return to the small screen in a Super Bowl commercial for Planet Fitness, praised NFTs in Forbes Magazine saying, “It’s only a matter of time before everyone in Hollywood and beyond gets involved… I see a future where crypto, NFTs, and blockchain will be the norm rather than the exception.”
What Critics Are Saying

NFTs may be making an impression on the internet lately, but not everyone is getting behind Witherspoon’s interest in NFTs or Hello Sunshine’s latest venture.
When she announced the collaboration with World of Women via Twitter on Thursday, there were many mixed reactions in the replies. One user commented, “are you not embarrassed be honest,” and another responded, “yass let’s destroy the planet under a fake guise of feminism!”
In another thread where Reese posted an exert from her appearance on NFT Now’s podcast, (NFT Now is a platform dedicated to covering the latest news and conversation about NFTs), a Twitter user had some strong words when he commented “Elle Woods would drag you for this.”

Whether Elle Woods would be on board or not or if Warner Huntingtington III would be interested in NFTs, it will be interesting to see how Reese Witherspoon will continue to incorporate NFTs into her career, and how her actions may influence other celebrities!
