Carole King: Singer, Songwriter, Musician
Carole King Klein, born Carol Joan Klein, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. She has been working in the entertainment industry since 1958. She got her start as one of the staff songwriters at the Brill Building before heading off on her own as a solo artist.
King has since become one of the most successful female songwriters in the last half of the 20th century and has written or co-written 118 pop hits that have the Billboard Hot 100 charts. She has also written 61 hits that charted in the U.K., making her the most successful female songwriter on the U.K. singles charts from 1962 to 2005.
King got her start when she and then-husband Gerry Goffin began writing songs in the 1960s. She did not receive fame until she started singing her own sings in the 1970s. Although her debut album “Writer” failed to live up to expectations, her album “Tapestry” topped the U.S. album chart for fifteen weeks in 1971 and stayed on the charts for over six years!
Throughout her career, King has recorded more than 25 solo albums, although none of them received the same acclaim as “Tapestry.” She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a performer, and again as a songwriter. King also holds the distinction of being the first woman to be honored with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, which was awarded to her in 2013. She also became a Kennedy Center Honoree in 2015.
Today, fans are celebrating her birthday with some of her best chart-topping hits. Have a listen!
