Fans are anxiously awaiting season 2 of “Bridgerton,” which is expected to return to Netflix on March 25, 2022.
The first season was a hit with fans, focusing on the love story between Regé-Jean Page’s Duke of Hastings and Phoebe Dynevor’s Daphne Bridgerton. Although Simon Hastings won’t be making an appearance in season 2, showrunner Chris Van Dusen teased that fans will still see a lot of Daphne in the show's sophomore season.
What Is Going On With Daphne Bridgerton Now?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Van Dusen and Dynevor sat down to talk about what fans can expect from Daphne in season 2.
“Daphne remains a vital part of our story,” Van Dusen said. “She's now a devoted wife and, of course, still a loyal sister to her seven siblings. It's a bit of a reverse of their season 1 dynamic, in terms of Anthony sticking his nose in Daphne's business. Now Daphne gets to stick her nose in his.”
“Daphne has become the adult of the family,” Dynevor added. “She's found what she's looking for — she's had a baby, she's a wife and mother. There's a real confidence and womanhood about her this season.”
Although her older brother, Anthony Bridgerton, was running the family last season, it seems that the tables have turned.
“She's running the family because she's the one who's settled now,” Dynevor added. “She is the rock of the siblings in this season, which is quite nice to play. Daphne's leading the way in terms of knowing what love is, what it means, and what marriage means, and she's trying to pass on that knowledge to Anthony.”
“Daphne has a really good knack of not only empathizing with people around her, but also seeing their blind spots,” Dynevor added. “She did it with Simon, and now she's doing it with Anthony.”
Although Daphne still will keep some of those same character traits, there will be some aspects of Daphne’s personality that are a bit different.
“Daphne's a lot looser,” Dynevor explained. “She comes back to the house quite free and ready to have fun and let her hair down a bit. The country house definitely brings that out in her and everyone.”
So What Is Going On With Anthony Bridgerton?
Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan Bailey, will have his love life put under the microscope this season.
“We left Anthony at a bit of a crossroads at the end of season 1,” van Dusen explained in a separate interview. “He had just been through this relationship, if you want to even call it that, with his mistress Sienna, and he enters this season knowing he has to find a wife.”
“Duty and honor are the two themes that we're really digging into this for next season,” he added. “[He's been] carrying the weight of his family on his shoulders ever since his dad died. It's been a real struggle for him.”
“We first met him up against a tree with his mistress and over the course of the season, we saw him make mistakes, and we came to understand why he was making those mistakes, which I think has just set him up so perfectly for season 2,” he continued.
“We're taking Anthony to some really fantastic and complicated places. We fully broke him at the end of season 1, and now, we get to put him back together in a way that I think makes him all the better for it.”
In the upcoming second season, Anthony declares that Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran) is his ideal match. However, he also finds himself falling for her headstrong sister Kate after she tries to interfere with their love affair (Simone Ashley).
“You can understand why he's drawn to both,” Bailey said. “And they're both drawn to him in turn. It's an interesting love triangle; it's dangerous when it's siblings. It's bestial between them in a way season 1 wasn't. They're all animals with each other.”
Van Dusen teased the electric chemistry between Bailey and Ashley, saying, “It’s out of this world. The season is charged and transporting and romantic.”
Fans will get to see what he means when Netflix releases the second season of “Bridgerton” on March 25, 2022!
