Long before "Spider-Man: No Way Home" hit the theatres, many rumors made rounds regarding those who would be involved in the movie. Rumors suggested that Tobey Maguire would make a cameo appearance in the project. However, he refused to address the tales, leading most fans to believe in the inaccuracy of the news.
Another rumor hit stating that Andrew Garfield will be returning. Unlike Maguire, who kept sealed lips, he had no qualms addressing the rumors.
However, it came as a shock to most fans when "No Way Home" eventually hit the theatres. Garfield had no other choice but to come out clean. In his interview with Deadline, he revealed that while he was persuaded to return by Marvel, he was also waiting for Maguire to join in.
"I was just waiting to see if Tobey was going to do it, and if Tobey was going to do it, then I was like, 'Well, I have no choice,' you know? I follow Tobey to the ends of the Earth. I'm a lemming for Tobey," Garfield jocularly replied. "But that was sincerely a big part of it when I was approached about it, and again, it's similar to what Tobey was saying. It was like, "Oh, the intention feels very pure here. It feels like a great creative idea and a great creative story."
How Was Maguire Signed On?
Initially featured in the original Spider-Man trilogy in the early 2000s, Maguire revealed he was impressed with the pitch from longtime Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal.
"In that conversation with producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal, the intention, the kind of love and celebration of these movies and what it meant, I think, to Amy and Kevin was apparent," Maguire said. "And to me, when artists or, you know, people who are steering the creative process have a kind of authentic, genuine intent of celebration and love, it just was so apparent in both of them, that, I don't know, I just wanted to join that," Maguire said.
He said his involvement was on the premise of "really about getting together with these people and revisiting what was part of my history and getting a chance to come together."
Tom Holland Was Initially Nervous When He Met Maguire And Garfield
Tom Holland recently opened up meeting Maguire and Garfield for the first time and how he was a bundle of nerves.
In an interview with Peter Hammond for the official Spider-Man YouTube channel, he mentioned how daunting it was.
"It was daunting. It was daunting because we were a long way into shooting before you guys showed up. The date of 'The other Spider-Mans are coming' was etched on my calendar. And the closer and closer I got, the more nervous I was. As soon as I met you guys in Atlanta, I realized I had nothing to be nervous about, but, at our first rehearsal, I had asked Jacob and Zendaya to come with me, to just kind of be there as my support system."
He also added, "Like 'I'm going to go and meet these guys. I'm nervous about it. We have to read the scene, and I don't know how this will go because we're all playing the same character, and we all have to bring our own heart and soul into this. It means a lot to them, and it means a lot to me.' So Jacob and Zendaya were there on that first day."
Garfield Would Like To Play Another Spider-Man After This
When asked by Variety if he'd like to play Spider-Man again, he replied in the affirmative.
"I mean, yes, definitely open to something if it felt right," Garfield said. "Peter and Spider-Man, those characters are all about service, to the greater good and the many. He's a working-class boy from Queens that knows struggle and loss and is deeply empathetic. I would try to borrow Peter Parker's ethical framework in that; if there were an opportunity to step back in and tell more of that story, I would have to feel sure in myself."
Holland Didn't Expect The Extent Of The Movie Reception
Although Holland knew that the movie would be loved globally, he had no idea that it would be a huge reception, taking in $1.693 billion globally and $722.9 million locally.
"I mean, I always knew that this film would be loved around the world. I didn't think it would be quite as massive as it has been," Holland began. "One of my favorite things to do at the minute is to go online and watch fans' reactions to you guys coming in that one scene in particular. I don't think I could ever have imagined it as being so well received by everyone," he added.
"I mean, I guess I had an idea that people would love this movie, but in no way, shape, or form could I have thought it was going to be as big as it has been," Holland concluded.
