The original Charlie Brown voice actor, Peter Robbins, has passed away. He was only 65 years old.

Relatives told the local Fox 5 affiliate that the Carlsbad native took his own life last week. His family is asking for privacy as they mourn his loss. They have announced plans for a memorial service, which will be held at a later date.

The voice actor had brought joy to millions of children by providing the voice of Charlie Brown from the original Peanuts cartoons in the 1960s. Robbins first provided the voice for Charlie Brown in 1963 and reprised his role in several other Peanuts animated shorts.

He loved the character so much that he even had a tattoo of Charlie Brown and Snoopy on his arm.

Close Friend Phil Blauer Remembers ‘Close Friend’ Peter Robbins

Fox 5’s Phil Blauer was reportedly a close friend of the voice actor over the last two decades.

He said that he shared in Robbins’ joys and struggles. He had once even interviewed him from jail after Robbins made criminal threats against several individuals, including San Diego County Sheriff Bill Bore. Blauer also spoke with Robbins when he was in rehab, battling a drug and alcohol addiction.

Robbins was interviewed again when he was released from prison in 2019. At the time, Robbins spoke candidly about his struggles with mental health.

“I would recommend to anybody that has bipolar disorder to take it seriously because your life can turn around in the span of a month, like it did to me,” Robbins was quoting saying. “I came out of prison and I’m a better person for it. I’m much more humble and grateful and thankful that I lived through the experience.”

Blauer says that he wishes that he could have done more to help his friend.

“I will always treasure his nickname for me,” Blauer said. “He used to call me ‘Scoop.’ Rest in peace Charlie Brown, say hi to Linus for me up in heaven.”

“RIP to Peter Robbins, the first voice of Charlie Brown for A Charlie Brown Christmas,” one fan wrote. “No matter how into animation you are, I think everyone on the planet has heard this voice. A legendary voice from a legendary person, that will be dearly missed, thank you for everything.”
