Who Votes For The Golden Globe Award Winners?

The winners of the prestigious award are determined by the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). This association comprises United States-based reporters who write for different news outlets worldwide.

The HFPA consists of about 90 members, which is relatively small compared to the deciding board for the Oscars awards. The Oscars awards academy has about 9000 voting members who come together to decide the award winners.

Only a few members are accepted into the HFPA annually, and they are based on specific criteria. A major requirement for membership is covering entertainment news for foreign outlets. The members must also be a member of an accredited journalist organization.

How Is The Voting Process?

When it is time for nominations, the academy awards members start by submitting ballots alongside a list of movie projects. All selected movies must have been released in the United States within the calendar year of eligibility.

Each member submits five nominations for each category which must have been ranked 1-5 by them. The HFPA attends different occasions of movie screenings, film festivals, private screenings, and DVD screeners.

All HFPA members must vote secretly for who they want the winner of each category to be. An accounting firm carefully counts the ballots before picking the deserved winners for each category.

With these processes, the HFPA has proven to be very selective with their choices both on recruiting members into the association and voting nominees for the prestigious award.

The Difference Between Golden Globe And Oscars

The membership requirements and voting processes are evidence that the Golden Globe award is quite different from the Oscars award. The Golden Globe ceremony awards both television and film to completely cover the scope of entertainment.

Entertainment studios are also open to the opportunity of working with another award show apart from the Oscars. For the awarding body, their properties get enough screen-time in front of as many fans/viewers as possible.

Over the years, many award analysts always rated Golden Globe awards as a firm and solid sign of several projects that might get a nomination for the Oscars. The academy voters for the Oscars also have another opportunity to see the individuals that contributed to various projects.

They also get the chance to hear what the nominees/winners say in their acceptance speeches at the award show. However, recently, controversies were surrounding the membership of the HFPA that had no black members.
