Black shared some very special news about the original version, which she released when she was just 13-years-old, ahead of Wednesday’s big premiere of the “Friday” remix.
“? this week FRIDAY turns 10 AND has gone GOLD ?? been cooking up a very special remix featuring some iconic people………..it drops on the 10 year anniversary,” she wrote on social media.
As many fans recall, the combination of the repetitive lyrics and the corny music video made the internet go crazy. Her new music video had a lot more production value but will still get the lyrics stuck in your head. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!
Rebecca’s life changed forever when the OG hit the interweb back in 2011. Unfortunately, not all of the changes were positive. The songstress reflected on what it was like dealing with so much public scrutiny as a 13-year-old last year.
“The way that I feel about that song has really changed,” she told USA Today. “I’ve done a lot of work to heal from the more painful parts of what that experience was for me. I get so many comments, and it’s so surprising to me how many people have such a genuine, nostalgic love for it.”
She has come a long way since the 9th anniversary of the original, where she claimed the song almost ruined her life.
“9 years ago today a music video for a song called ‘friday’ was uploaded to the internet,” Rebecca wrote at the time. “above all things, i just wish i could go back and talk to my 13 year old self who was terribly ashamed of herself and afraid of the world. to my 15 year old self who felt like she had nobody to talk to about the depression she faced. to my 17 year old self who would get to school only to get food thrown at her and her friends.”
At 19-years-old, the “Friday” effect started to affect her musical career. “[Rebecca] had almost every producer/songwriter tell me they’d never work with me.” Cut to today and the new “Friday” remix music video has already racked up over 50,000 views in the first hour of its premiere.
