Tenisha’s great uncle William Byron Rumford was the first black person to be elected to the California legislator from the Bay Area. His goal was to desegregate the opportunity on the West Coast. As a legislator, Byron wrote many important bills pertaining to equal education and job opportunities, but one of the most important was for equal housing.
One of Rumford’s most important achievements was the passage of the California Fair Employment Practices Act, which outlawed employment discrimination. Plus, the ‘Rumford Act’ banned racial
discrimination in the selling or renting of real estate.
The legendary leader’s great-niece will now continue his legacy by working with the famous real estate firm to ensure people of all backgrounds are able to get competitive in the market of high-value real estate.
It’s unclear if Tenisha Smith will make an appearance on the popular reality show, but it’s a great moment to be celebrated on Martin Luther King Day.
