It’s been nearly two years since Nikki Bella announced her retirement from wrestling.
The 37-year-old former Divas Champion revealed the end of her in-ring career in June 2019 after doctors discovered a cyst on her brain.
A lot has changed in Nikki’s life since then, but as many wrestlers have stated before, you can’t escape the business.
Nikki and her sister Brie has expressed interest in possibly making a WWE return. In fact, Nikki is open to the idea of working behind-the-scenes instead of in front of the camera.
New Member To The Creative Team?
Rumors about a possible return for The Bella Twins started back in November when Brie and Nikki hinted they may have one more run left in them. The sisters said if they’d love to have a chance at the women’s tag titles if they were to ever step into the ring again.
During a recent interview on Ashley Graham’s “Pretty Big Deal” podcast, Nikki and Brie were once again asked about a potential return.
Nikki said she’d love to work with WWE at some point, and added she’d love to be part of the creative team. She goes on to explain that she wants to work with the women’s division, and with her expertise she’d help bring out each lady’s potential.
If anyone were a good fit for WWE’s creative team, it would be Nikki.
The star and her sister Brie have racked up quite the accomplishments throughout their career.
Their wrestling journey started back 2006 when they auditioned for WWE’s Diva Search. Although, they didn’t make the cut, WWE signed them to a contract.
After undergoing training, the sisters would make their television debut in August 2008. The two became a hit thanks to their signature twin magic move, where they’d switch places to secure a win.
2011 would be a pivotal moment in the twins’ careers with them each winning the Divas Championship. However, by 2012, the girls decided to leave WWE, but they weren’t gone for long.
After a year-long hiatus, the Bellas returned in March 2013, and their careers would skyrocketed. Now starring on the E! Network series “Total Divas,” Nikki and Brie became stars both in and out of the ring.
Nikki’s biggest feud would be with WWE’s fan favorite AJ Lee. After defeating Lee for the title in November 2014, Nikki would go on to became the longest-reigning Divas Champion of all-time, beating the previous record held by Lee.
Nikki’s reign would eventually come to an end when she was defeated by Charlotte Flair. Following the loss, Nikki would undergo surgery for a neck injury.
After 10 months out of action, Nikki made her return at the 2016 SummerSlam PPV. Nikki would become a member of Team Smackdown and was top star on the blue brand. However, after her tag match at WrestleMania 33, she took another break from wrestling.
In recent years, Nikki and Brie returned for special appearances. In 2018, they participated in the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble match. Then later that year, Nikki would challenge Ronda Rousey for the RAW Women’s Championship at the women’s only PPV Evolution.
Trailblazer In The Women’s Revolution
Throughout their wrestling careers, Nikki and Brie faced criticisms. Many fans said the girls weren’t talented in the ring, and were only receiving a push due to their significant others.
Despite the criticisms, Nikki showed she had a passion for the sport. Not only did her in-ring work improve, but she became a leader for the women’s division.
Nikki has talked about how she fought for equal rights for the female roster. During Nikki’s early years in WWE, the women received little air time, and often had matches cut so the men could have extra time.
Nikki would also help bring new legions of fans to WWE television. Thanks to “Total Divas” and “Total Bellas,” viewers began tuning in to WWE to see the Bellas and the rest of the ladies in action.
Nikki and Brie’s contributions haven’t gone unnoticed, in 2020 it was revealed they were one of the inductees into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Retirement And WWE Return?
Since Nikki’s retirement in 2019, the star has kept herself busy.
She became engaged to her “Dancing With the Stars” partner Artem Chigvintsev, and they welcomed their son Matteo on July 31, 2020.
Aside from becoming a mom, Nikki is also working on her clothing and hair care lines.
Although, she already has her hands full, Nikki is open to the possibility of a WWE return and maybe working on the creative team.
WWE has made strides in their Women’s Revolution. Since its creation in 2015, women have received more air time and main-evented PPVs and other shows.
Although, WWE has a stacked roster full of talented women, sometimes the storytelling aspect need tweaking.
With Nikki on the creative team, one has to wonder what ideas she’d come up with.
