David “TheGrefg” Martinez knew Monday was going to be big for him, before the day even began. But by the time Monday was over, it turned out to be a historic day for the Spaniard.
With many of his 6.3 million Twitch followers online to watch the unveiling of his personalized Fortnite skin, TheGrefg used the buzz and massive following to destroy one of streaming’s most impressive records, nearly quadrupling the previous mark — and doing it before he even received his skin.
From Honor For 8 To Record For 1
The 23-year-old owner of EU Heretics was online to become the eighth person to receive their own skin as part of the Fortnite Icon Series, reserved for some of the biggest names associated with Fortnite, such as streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, DJ Marshmello and rapper Travis Scott.
But well before the skin was to be revealed, it was clear Monday was shaping up to be something far more impressive and memorable for TheGrefg and his fans.
New Year Already Looking Better Than Monstrous 2020
Reportedly Googling Twitch streaming records while waiting for Fortnite creator Epic Games to send him some image assets of his new skin, TheGrefg quickly realized that the buzz was exceeding just about everyone’s expectations.
It was reminiscent of the entire last year for TheGrefg, who, according to Inven Global, began 2020 with 1.5 Twitch followers and finished the year with 5.5 million — the fourth-largest gain on Twitch in 2020, per Inven Global.
TheGrefg: Good Luck Hitting This New Mark
And it was at the end of 2020 — Dec. 1, to be exact — when TheGrefg pulled off his greatest accomplishment, getting 660,000 concurrent viewers to watch him play in Fortnite’s Galactus event, breaking Ninja’s record of 635,000 that stood for more than two years.
But all of that was peanuts compared to what TheGrefg pulled off Monday.
Parlaying his growing following with his personalized-skin unveiling and his large fan base in Spain (and the large number of people staying home because of the COVID-19 pandemic), TheGrefg blew past his record early in his stream.
Record Even Leaves ‘Ninja’ Singing Praises
By the time the stream was over, TheGrefg had peaked at around 2.5 million concurrent viewers — some reports have the number at just below 2.5 million, others have it at a tick above. What’s more, TheGrefg’s mark more than doubled the previous record for TOTAL viewers, held by ELEAGUE TV at 1.1 million.
The mark even left Ninja himself praising TheGrefg.
“2.4 million live viewers on his Fortnite skin Debut! Congrats @TheGrefg,” Ninja tweeted. “absolute monster and you deserve it.”
