'American Idol' Alum Pia Toscano Files For Divorce

By Liz Walters

Singer Pia Toscano has filed for divorce from dancer Jimmy R.O. Smith after three years of marriage.

According to court records obtained by The Blast, Pia filed for divorce on January 6th, 2021, citing irreconcilable differences. It is unclear if the singer is asking for spousal support from her backup dancer husband, Jimmy R.O. Smith. The ex-couple have no children, so child support will not be an issue. Also, whether or not Pia and Jimmy have property and assets to divide will be determined at a later date. Most celebrities have prenuptial agreements and determining who gets what is fairly simple, especially for short-term marriages.

In January, 2017, Pia and Jimmy got married in New York. On the day of her wedding, Pia Toscano wrote on her Instagram, "I married my best friend today. I am on a cloud 9." According to Entertainment Tonight, Pia wore a custom dress designed by 'Project Runway' contestant Michael Costello, and the newlyweds danced to John Legend's "All of Me" for their first song.

The 'American Idol' alum was introduced to Smith in 2014 by Jennifer Lopez, when they were performing as a backup singer and dancer on Lopez' tour. Interestingly, Jennifer Lopez was married to one of her backup dancers, Cris Judd, and also dated another backup dancer, Casper Smart. Pia Toscano also loves her dancers. Besides marrying Jimmy R.O. Smith, she dated 'Dancing With the Stars' professional dancer, Mark Ballas.

After auditioning for 'American Idol' four times, Pia Toscano made her way to Hollywood. In Season 10 of the hit show, she made it through to the Top 24. Toscano was eliminated after finishing in ninth place. It was reported that her elimination was shocking to judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Randy Jackson. It was also reported that Toscano's exit from the competition was one of the most shocking eliminations in 'American Idol' history. For her final performance, Pia performed Ike and Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High".

Following her elimination from 'American Idol', Pia Toscanco signed with Interscope Records. In 2014, Pia Toscano joined Jennifer Lopez on a six-date summer tour as a background singer, the same tour where she met her future husband and backup dancer, Jimmy R.O. Smith. Pia has performed with "Star Spangled Banner" for several professional sports events and was considered for a role on the hit show 'Glee'. Pia has toured recently toured with David Foster and Andrea Bocelli.

Pia took to her Instagram to sum up her 2020 year, and possibly alluding to the end of a chapter; her marriage. The singer wrote, "As this year comes to an end, and I reflect on all that I have learned, I have realized that I need a detox from social media for a little while to spiritually and emotionally rejuvenate. Nothing’s wrong, I’m totally fine... I’m just more self aware now & want to be more present in the precious passing moments. Although this has been an incredibly challenging year for most, it has been filled with many blessings & lessons that I am beyond grateful for & could’ve never learned had I not walked through the fire. I will still be posting new YouTube content & all performance/album updates will be shared by @piatoscanoupdates for the time being. LOVE YOU ALL!!! Happy New Year!"
