Although Julianne Hough’s romantic side most recently made headlines when her and longtime husband Brooks Laich split up rather dramatically, that was surely not the only significant relationship in the “Footloose” star’s life.
Now, her long-removed ex Chuck Wicks is speaking out in a new discussion on his podcast “Talk to Chuck” about just how their breakup went down over a decade ago, basically blaming the actress for why their relationship didn’t work and breaking a ten-year-plus promise to not speak on the time that they were together.
Back from 2008-2009, Hough dated country singer Wicks and enjoyed what may refer to as a picture perfect relationship. However, the face-value happiness wasn’t indicative of the pair’s real strife behind closed doors.
In the most recent episode of his podcast, the star shared with fellow musician Carly Pearce about how him and Hough met, and how the terms of their relationship went so south that the pair had to amicably agree to never speak on the situation again, until now.
“You go out there, we’re both loving life, we’re on a high because we’re both, our careers were going great. You know, we bought a house together, did all these things and then out of nowhere you find out that they’re not the person that you thought they were and you break up,” he said of his time with Hough.
Talking particularly about their split, Wicks admitted, “And, you know, I found myself doing a CMA red carpet, and we made a pact together to basically lie, to say, no, we just wanted to part ways, everything’s fine. It wasn’t fine. Sh** hit the fan.”
Although Wicks didn’t reveal too many intrinsic details of their relationship or split, he shared enough in the chat to make it seem as though he blames Hough entirely for them breaking up.
“You know, I’m not going to throw anybody under the bus but it wasn’t my fault,” he told Pearce. “So you find yourself when you’re in love, everything’s great, people are loving watching you on Instagram, oh this is the perfect couple, couple goals and all this stuff. But then, man, if something goes wrong you gotta face that too.”
Painting A Different Picture
Back in 2009, People initially reported on Hough and Wicks’ split, with Hough’s comments at the time shining a very different light on the breakup than Wicks does today.
We’re both just really, really busy with our careers, and we spend a lot of time apart from each other, so we’re just taking a little break right now. Honestly, Chuck and I are such good friends—we still hang out all the time, and we’re still writing together.”
Given these recent admissions by Wicks, it appears that simply was not the case at all.
