In a recent interview, the actress talked about how much she enjoyed decorating her home during the holidays and how her choices are environment-friendly. She also shared some tips about how she went about it. Keep reading to find out what she said.
Deschanel Said She Prefers A Real Christmas Tree
While listing her Christmas decorations in an interview with Showbiz Cheatsheet, Deschanel made sure to announce that she stuck to choices that were good for the environment. She revealed that instead of an artificial Christmas tree, she preferred to reduce waste by planting a live one.
Deschanel also gushed about how much she loved the smell and preferred trees that could be replanted. She said, “Nothing beats the smell of a fresh Christmas tree during the Holidays! One of my favorite ways to be more eco-conscious this time of year is to use a live potted tree that can be planted outdoors after the holiday season.”
The actress continued, “Alive Christmas trees that still have the root ball intact are ideal for short term decorating during the holidays but can be replanted to provide benefits for the environment long after the holiday season has passed. Plus, it’s a great outdoor activity to do with the kids.”
Deschanel Made Her Own Wreath
Deschanel’s environmentally friendly holiday decorations don’t stop at just her Christmas trees; the actress also extended it to her wreath. She revealed that she preferred making it herself instead of just buying one from the store. According to her, it’s a great opportunity to recycle materials by using those already discarded.
She said, “Nothing says ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ like making a holiday wreath using natural materials you gather yourself!” Deschanel made use of things from her garden and included her children in the fun by having them look for things like leaves, berries, and other stuff from the backyard.

The “New Girl” star continued, “I love to create my own unique wreath to put on my front door for the whole holiday season by using scraps of greenery from our garden, produce from our Lettuce Grow Farmstand, and clippings from our Christmas tree.”
Deschanel Made A Citrus Garland
Among her homemade decorations, Deschanel revealed that she also made citrus garlands. She said, “Dried citrus is a family-favorite DIY and sustainable craft I do with my kids during the holidays– we love the organic look and festive smell the dried citrus fruits add to our holiday decor!”
She also mentioned that she would ensure that she didn’t waste fruits unnecessarily and would use only forgotten fruits from her refrigerator and the less-than-stellar produce from her local farmer’s market.
The actress shared, “To reduce waste, I try to use up oranges, lemons and grapefruit that were left forgotten in the fridge or buy some of the wonkiest-looking produce at my local farmer’s market to give them a second life. All I do is thinly slice the fruit, bake at a low heat for a few hours until they are completely dehydrated, string the dried slices onto twine and hang!”
Deschanel And Scott Purchased A New Home
The couple recently revealed that they bought a new home together in Los Angeles. They initially had two houses to choose from but opted for the second because the other one could hide snakes. Scott gushed about the house and said that he was sure it was perfect for them as soon as he saw it.
Via his magazine column, Scott said, “The second house was a 1938 Georgian-style home designed by renowned California architect Gerard Colcord. As we pulled up on the drive, it just seemed magical.” He revealed that the house had a park-like appearance with beautiful trees and grasses.

He continued, “It sat on a little over an acre, and with its lush lawn and massive California sycamores, it looked like a park. Which is why when we first brought the kids by the property, they dubbed it the Park House. And you know what happens when you name something, whether it’s a mangy stray dog or a beautiful home of your dreams? You keep it. The next thing you know, Zooey and I owned the Park House.”
