Danny Masterson was recently accused of sexually assaulting three women and was charged to court for it.
The actor was first arrested in June on the rape allegations but was later let out on bail. Making his first appearance in a Los Angeles courtroom on Friday, Masterson stood before the court in a blue suit and a face mask.
At the same time, his attorney declared his innocence and dismissed the charges against him, saying it was politicized. The three women who accused Masterson of rape sat in the gallery watching the proceedings.
Masterson’s Lawyers Decline A Plea Deal
Sitting next to his attorneys Tom Mesereau and Sharon Appelbaum, “That ’70s Show” actor did not enter a plea deal, and one of his attorneys, Mesereau, claimed the charges was based on events that took place almost two decades ago.
He also noted that it only gained a foothold due to the unfair media hype that wanted his client to be prosecuted as District Attorney Jackie Lacey faces an election.
Mesereau, who is well-known for his representation of Bill Cosby and Micheal Jackson in their sexual misconduct cases, continued that the rape case against Masterson is a political one and promised to prove that his client is innocent.
Protecting Danny Masterson’s Privacy
Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller called the allegations “pure speculation, with no basis.” The judge presiding over the case, Superior Court Judge Miguel T. Espinoza, granted a media request to allow cameras in court to record the proceedings.
Mesereau argued that media presence would be unfair to his client and degrade the potential jury pool.
In his argument, Mesereau maintained that everything should be done to tone down the circus-like atmosphere and asked that his clients’ rights be protected. The judge denied a request made by the defense for a protective order to seal the case files from the public and prevent the police, prosecutors, and potential witnesses from revealing information to the media.
The #MeToo Exposé
The defense also filed documents asking that the evidence against Masterson be thrown out as insufficient. However, a hearing was scheduled to contemplate the issue before Masterson enters a plea.
Before his first arrest, the 44-year-old actor was investigated for three years in the #MeTooEra movement. The investigation had several charges, which led to no charges due to lack of evidence or time-lapse.
Surprisingly, the three women’s allegations stuck and led to the popular Hollywood actor’s arrest and prosecution. There have been mixed feelings from fans regarding this situation, but the court has the ultimate say.
Guilty Or Not
Many of the actors’ friends trooped to the court with him and stood in the courthouse hall as he awaited his hearing.
Only a few of his friends and supporters were admitted to the courtroom to witness the proceedings. This was done due to the COVID-19 regulations and social distancing.
The prosecutors alleged that the actor raped all three women in his home, first a 23-year-old woman in 2001, then a 28-year-old woman in April 2003, and lastly, another 23-year-old woman between October and December 2003.
If convicted of the three allegations, Masterson could face up to forty-five years in jail.
