President Joe Biden expressed his “deep condolences” for the passing of Desmond Tutu.

The Archbishop was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

He has received worldwide recognition for his non-violent opposition to apartheid in South Africa.

The White House released a formal statement regarding his passing.

Biden said that they “felt his warmth and joy” during the 2010 World Cup.

He also mentioned Tutu’s 90th birthday, which was celebrated on October 7.

“His legacy transcends borders and will echo throughout the ages,” the statement said.

They expressed their “deepest condolences to the people of South Africa.”

“May God bless Archbishop Desmond Tutu,” they concluded.
