New York just witnessed an unprecedented spike in COVID-19 cases.

44,431 new infections were recorded in a 24-hour period.

27,053 of those new infections came from New York City.

Only 982 cases came from the Capital Region around Albany.

Long Island saw 8,216 new cases.

The Finger Lakes region only saw a rise of 806 cases.

The record breaking spike was more than double that was seen in January 2021.

The single highest total then was just under 20,000 cases per day.

On Thursday, John Hopkins University recorded 261,339 COVID-19 cases in 24 hours – the third-highest total in the U.S.
