Although many feel as though the affects of the COVID-19 pandemic have extended far beyond the virus itself, Selena Gomez has decided to speak out about just how much the pandemic and subsequent quarantine measures initially affected her, saying the isolation spurred "depression" within her.

Taking to Instagram Live on October 11 with Dr. Vivek Murthy to discuss mental health awareness, Gomez used the instance as a perfect time to talk candidly about her own struggles with depression during this year.

During their discussion, Murthy, who formerly served as U.S. Surgeon General, asked Gomez how she had spent her time during quarantine, which caused the singer to digress about the overt level of "depression" she initially felt as lockdown measures encroached and everyone was mostly forced to stay inside.

"In the beginning, I couldn't deal with it that well," she began telling Murthy about how the lockdown affected her mental well-being at the time, and for some time going forward from that.

Entering Depression

"I kind of went into a bit of a depression. Then, I started going into a place where I was really writing and being active, and then I guess it just forced me to have that time. And again, I've been able to spend time with those people, those quality people, a lot more than I ever had and spending a lot more time with my family," she said of the ups and downs that the time alone caused for her both mentally and physically.

Dealing With The New 'Normal'

Gomez said that she weirdly feels as though she has somewhat "become normalized to this situation that's not normal."

"But yeah, I mean, my job is a lot of travel, connecting to people, making people happy and that makes me happy, so, it has been a struggle," she went on to say about how the lack of traveling has profoundly affected her ability to behave in the manner she is most used to, causing a conscious shift in her daily behavior.

As for how she is doing with those complex emotions now that some time has progressed beyond initial quarantine measures, Gomez maintains that she is drowning out any negative feelings by immersing herself in work.

"I would say right now I'm fully coming out again, and I just think I had to handle it the way I needed to handle it, and I got through that with the right people and doing the right things and doing the right steps to not make me go crazy," she told Murthy.
