Pokimane’s real name is Imane Anys, and she was born on May 14th, 1996 in Morocco, North Africa to French parents. Her family moved to Canada when she was four years old, where she grew up speaking three languages: English, French, and Darija. This last language is the name of the Arabic dialect that is spoken within Morocco. Pokimane continues to hold dual citizenship in Canada and Morocco while she currently lives in the US.

Pokemane started online video gaming with League of Legends and Fortnight in 2013. In the next few years, she expanded to Twitch and YouTube, where she highlighted her video gaming experience and became tremendously popular. In 2017 alone, reports Netline, she gained 450,000 followers, which resulted in her receiving the Shorty Award. But life wasn’t just about creating online content at that time: Pokimane was also very serious about her studies, enrolling in McMaster University in 2017 as a full-time chemical engineering student. She dropped out at the end of her second year in 2019 in order to dedicate herself to creating content for her streaming platforms full-time.
Pokimane has had her share of online conflicts.
Amidst her rise to fame and her financial success, Pokimane also became embroiled in controversies with other streamers. Since 2018, for instance, there have been arguments with Keemstar, an intense conflict with YouTuber Bowblax, and issues with streamer It’saGundam. In 2020, Pokimane announced that she would take a month off from streaming. In reality, the young online content creator only took off for two weeks — but when she returned, she presented to the online social media world a video in various parts, each one containing an apology for her role in the conflicts with other streamers.
Pokimane co-founded Offline TV.
Pokimane joined forces with other online creators and co-founded the online social entertainment group OfflineTV (OTV). The group streams video of the residents living together in the official OTV home in Los Angeles. After a year and a half, Pokimane announced in June of 2020 that she was leaving the OTV home. She later revealed that the main reason for her departure was due to conflicts with former OTV resident and content creator Federico Michael Gayton, also known as the Fedmyster.
Pokimane helped bring ASMR to the internet.
Lastly, within the last few years, Pokimane established her YouTube channel Poki ASMR. Her fans responded positively to her voice which whispered phrases into a microphone, accompanied by other techniques designed to trigger a tingling, pleasant response in the listener in the scalp and/or a tingling sensation up and down the spine. As of September 2019, Pokimane’s ASMR channel is now defunct, but during its run it posted over 40 ASMR videos.
