The action-packed police procedural drama series "Chicago P.D." returned to the silver screen on September 22, 2021. The long-running show is in its ninth installment, and at this time, almost half of the preplanned episodes have aired on the NBC network.

Already, "Chicago P.D." season nine has had a steaming fall finale that highlighted the lives of lead characters Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton. The pair officially got engaged at the start of the new season, but their love story suffered a setback after Halstead discovered Upton killed Roy Walton.

Consequences

Despite Halstead and Upton sharing a deep affection for each other, it is clear they have a strong tendency to make self-destructive decisions. From Upton abetting the cover-up of the murder to Halstead keeping it a secret and partnering with Voight to chase off the FBI, they keep piling up their issues like a stack of dominoes bound to scatter.

In addition, their hasty decision to get married might pose more harm than good in the long run. If fans should believe the words of showrunner Gwen Sigan in his interview with TV Line, trouble lies in paradise for the couple when the show returns.

"This is one of those Chicago P.D. episodes [ Season 9 Episode 9] with no good options," she opined. Sigan then disclosed that their actions would have consequences regardless of whether the murder secret remains uncovered.

She noted that living with the guilt of all that has happened will strongly affect the couple's current realities.

Hailey Upton Killed Roy Walton

Fans can recall from the season eight finale that Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) shot and killed antagonist Roy Walton (Michael Maize) to save Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) during a scuffle. Walton tried to use Voight's gun on him, but Hailey thankfully came to the rescue. Subsequently, Voight and Upton kept the murder a secret, burnt the body, and buried the remnants.

Halstead had no idea what had transpired but knew something did not seem right with his love interest as she began to act weirdly around him. After much careful observance and sleuthing around, he uncovers the mystery about Walton's death.

With the FBI turning all stones to find Walton, the situation kept worsening until Halstead had to choose to either protect his lover or snitch on her. Deep down, he knew whatever decision he made might haunt him for the rest of his life.

Torn between obeying his badge or helping his lover, Halstead picked the latter and figured out a way to save the day. Then he made a hasty decision by asking Upton to marry him. The pair eloped in the season nine fall finale and privately tied the knot at a secret courthouse.

How Halstead Saved Upton

The highlight of "Chicago P.D." season nine episode nine was seeing Halstead choose to put everything on the line for love. FBI Agent Walker North (Alex Morf) informed Halstead that the bureau had discovered the buried remnants of Walton's body.

He threatened to make him and Upton take the fall for the murder if he offered no help in taking down Voight.

Voight and Halstead then formulated a counter plan to safeguard their interest. Connivingly, they used North's drug-addicted brother to pressure him off the case keeping their secret safe.

Although the pair had not always been on good terms, one can assume that Halstead would not be turning Voight in. Halstead clearly realizes that he has a lot to lose if he follows that path and seems willing to carry the burden of guilt.
