This announcement comes after the success of Gaga's sixth studio album, 'Chromatica,' which was released back at the end of May. She teased various cover artists and then won big on May 29 with the album's release.

Chromatica was led by the singles "Stupid Love" and "Rain On Me" featuring Ariana Grande. It went on to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The success of Chromatica occurred after Gaga teamed up with Global Citizen for a 'Together At Home' concert in April which raised over $128 million for COVID-19 relief. These funds are meant for COVID-19 treatment and vaccine development. Other stars that participated in the concert were Billie Eilish, Lizzo, the Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift, and more.

As far as Gaga's upcoming VMAs performance, things will be much different at the awards show this year due to the pandemic. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo initially gave the show the green light to be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn after the city did such a great job in bouncing back from the virus' spread and being the epicenter of it all. The VMAs ended up deciding that it would not be inside Barclays and would be outside and across NYCs boroughs.

Cuomo initially said that Barclays and performances outside of it could have limited to no audience but it appears that at audience members won't be part of any performance at this point.

“In close consultation with state and local health officials, it became clear at this time that outdoor performances with limited or no audience would be more feasible and safer than an indoor event," said spokespersons for MTV and the Barclays Center in a joint statement. The VMAs will highlight the boroughs in an exciting show and return to Barclays Center in 2021.”

“MTV will continue to work closely with the Department of Health, state and local officials, the medical community, and key stakeholders to ensure the safety of all involved.”
