On Sunday afternoon as he was recovering from the hours-long surgery, Cowell thanked his fans for sending love ... and of course took a little shot at himself.

"Some good advice... If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time. I have broken part of my back. Thank you to everyone for your kind messages. And a massive thank you to all the nurses and doctors. Some of the nicest people I have ever met. Stay safe everyone Simon."

Cowell didn't get any more specific about the extent of his injuries, but according to PEOPLE, Cowell underwent a "five-hour surgery and he has had to have a number of fusions and metal rod put into his back."
