Scott Peterson has just been sentenced to life in prison, for the murders of his wife Laci, and the couple's unborn child -- and the victim's mother slammed the convicted killer during today's court hearing.
According to multiple reports, Peterson was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2002 murders of his wife, and unborn son Conner. Originally, he was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to death row. But, last year he scored a few legal victories including his death sentence being overturned, and the California Supreme Court ruling a lower court should take a second look at the case to determine if the guilty verdict should be overturned.
Today, a judge heard arguments on the case, and sentence him to life in prison.
Laci Peterson's Mother Confronts Scott Peterson In Court Hearing
During the hearing, Laci's family was allowed to speak out against Peterson, and her mother directly and emotionally addressed the convicted killer. Sharon Rocha angrily confronted him, saying, "You betrayed her, your son, and everyone else. You ended two beautiful souls." Shockingly, Rocha recalled having dinner with the couple just days before Laci's death -- where she sat on the couch with her daughter and tried to feel the baby kick. "Scott doesn't want to do that," she quoted Laci. Adding, "But he'll come around someday."
"All the while we were there that evening you were already planning her murder," she told him in open court. Adding, "That evening was the last time I saw my daughter alive."
The grieving mother continued, Laci’s dead, Scott, because she loved you. She trusted you. Two things will never change," and "Laci and Connor will always be dead and you will always be their murderer."
Scott Peterson Sentenced To Life In Prison Without Parole
Other members of Laci Peterson's family spoke out during the hearing, including her brother and sister. Amy Rocha stated, "Nineteen years, and there's not a day that goes by that I don't think about my sister and the life that she could have had, and the life we could all [have] had with her and Conner. She never got to meet my family, her family, and that my boys will never know their aunt and cousin. There have been so many special occasions that Laci and Conner should have been here for. It makes me sick being here today in front of you again."
Her brother, Brent, added, "There are no words able to express the pain associated with not being able to experience life together."
In the end, the judge in the case sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole for Laci's murder, and 15 years to life for Conner's murder. The sentences are to run concurrently. According to the judge, the only mitigating factor, in this case, was that Peterson had no prior criminal history before the murders. She stated he had already paid $10,000 in restitution and a $5,000 fine -- along with spending 6,818 days behind bars.
Scott Peterson will face another judge in 2022, arguing to get a new trial in the case.
