Gabrielle Union is a renowned actress and a prominent supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community. Their 13-year-old child Zaya (who now identifies as a transgender female) caused a massive surge in criticism and controversy surrounding Union and her former NBA star husband Dwayne Wade.

The 47-year-old “Bring It On” actress shared on several occasions with news outlets and the press that despite harsh feedback from readers online, she will not change her stance towards the queer community and fully backs what her young son/daughter has done.

Gabrielle shared that she has actually been called a “witch” over her decision to allow Zaya to undergo transgender changes.

“I’ve literally been called a witch and I’m like, what the f***? Because there’s this notion that we can’t all exist as we are and for anyone of us to exist in any kind of different sort of way in all of our beauty and splendor and wonderful selves we should cast them out.”

Of course, many argued online that Zaya was too young to make a fully educated decision, but Gabrielle and Dwayne don’t agree.

'Educate Ourselves'

Gabrielle has received major criticism over her political correctness. She regularly cites that it is wrong to “misgender” someone and uses that as her primary argument in support of her then 12-year-old son becoming transgender:

“We all had to educate ourselves because we weren’t,” Gabrielle admitted. “We didn’t understand the trauma and the harm that’s caused by misgendering someone.”

Needless to say, the comments didn’t approve of Gabrielle’s sentiments at all with a majority insisting that this was completely inappropriate for a legal-child to make such significant changes to themselves.

'Never Turn Our Back'

Despite the criticism, both Wade and Union have said that it wasn’t about Zaya’s (previously Zion) age or maturity, it was about how he/she wanted to be identified.

“We will never turn our back on our baby and we’re not going to turn our back on your baby either,” Gabrielle told Jemele. “We’re always going to fight for the most marginalized. And if that takes more education for us then you have to humble yourself; ‘shush’ before you center yourself as an ally, we have to just keep doing that. And it’s not about our ego; it’s about safety.”

Any time a post appears on Gabrielle’s social media showing Zion/Zaya, comments like the following appear almost instantly:

“Errrrrrrr so can this daughter bare a child? No. Does this daughter have a womb? No. Does this daughter have ovaries? No.”

Gabrielle’s response to these comments is usually the same as what she’s posted before:

“We keep moving forward. We keep leading with love, light, and hope for a better more inclusive world. Stay put and stay mad if you want. We keep it pushing. Always. ❤❤❤ “
