In what might be the most on-theme move of 2020, songwriting machine Taylor Swift said she's dropping a whole album at midnight. The surprise release, titled "Folklore," is her 8th studio album and comes less than a year since her latest LP ("Lover").

Swift's news comes days Kanye West's similar announcement, saying he'd release his new album "Donda: With Child" on what we now know to be the same day, July 24th.

Given the timing (and their rocky relationship of 10+ years), The New York Times says they're "the most reliably combustible pair of stars in pop music."

Alongside a series of cryptic Instagram posts this morning, Swift said:

"Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned on that DID happen. And that thing is my 8th studio album, folklore. Surprise 🤗Tonight at midnight I’ll be releasing my entire brand new album of songs I’ve poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into," also adding that she "wrote and recorded this music in isolation."

Yet West's announcement was a bit different.

As per The Blast on Tuesday, Kanye West "revealed the track listing and release date for his next album, Donda, soon after going on a Twitter rant about his wife, Kim Kardashian West, and his mother-in-law, Kris Jenner."

Right now, the rapper's midnight release is still set to happen - but the NY Times reminds us that "the punctuality of West’s album, as always, is not guaranteed."

"His last several releases have had tumultuous rollouts, which have drawn dizzyingly thorough coverage yet also tested fans’ loyalty," they said.

With MTV recently confirming that the 2020 VMAs will still be held despite coronavirus concerns, we're almost exactly 11 years removed from the original Kanye/Taylor turmoil.

It's escalated into other allegations and unfoldings, the latest of which was in March (when the infamous phone call surrounding West's song "Famous" leaked in-full, showing Swift wasn't "lying" like his wife was saying she was).

Earlier today, someone on Twitter pointed out that "not even a freaking pandemic can sever the unholy cord that links Kanye West and Taylor Swift."

Another shared their prediction for Billboard's "Hot 100" chart next week, believing that Swift is "about to surpass Nicki (Minaj) as the female with the most entries."

"She’ll beat Kanye for a #1 album. Which means Kanye stans and barbz will be mad. Nicki might feature on Kanye’s album so the barbz will buy it to death to get the #1 vs Taylor. I’m not ready."

Ahead of her midnight release, Swift said she'll premiere "the music for 'cardigan,'" a track from the forthcoming "Folklore."
